The Lord Chancellor has re-appointed Punam Birly as a non-executive member of the Independent Monitoring Authority

Punam Birly has been reappointed by the Secretary of State for a new three-year term as a non-executive member of the Independent Monitoring Authority (IMA).

Beginning on December 8, 2022, her appointment will last until December 7, 2025.

Punam Birly’s life story

Petrofac Services Limited, a global provider of energy services, employs Punam Birly as its Director of Global Employment.

On December 8, 2020, she was appointed as a non-executive member of the IMA.

From 2008 to 2020, Ms. Birly worked as a Partner at KPMG LLP (UK).

She was the Tax and Legal Services Practice’s Head of Employment and Immigration and the point person on all problems relating to Brexit that affected people.

She formerly worked in a variety of expatriate tax, legal, and reward roles at Andersen, Deloitte, and PwC.

She is a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England & Wales.

Independent Authority for the Agreements on Citizens’ Rights
The EU (Withdrawal Agreement) Act 2020 authorized the establishment of the IMA (EUWAA).

The IMA has the authority to receive complaints, conduct investigations, and bring or participate in judicial procedures within the terms outlined in EUWAA.

The IMA has a responsibility to assess the efficacy of the legal system governing people’s rights.

The IMA must take into account the significance of addressing general or systemic concerns in the implementation and application of citizen rights when carrying out its duties.

The IMA operates in accordance with the procedure outlined in the Governance Code on Public Appointments for appointments and reappointments.
