Springbok Sevens Finish in Fourth Place at HSBC SVNS Perth After Defeating Spain and Australia in Tough Matches

The Springbok Sevens came up short at the HSBC SVNS Perth, finishing in fourth place after two tough losses on Sunday.

The team played hard but couldn’t quite get the results they wanted in the final stretch of the Australian tournament.

Blitzboks Fall to Spain in Bronze Final

The South African side lost 14-7 to Spain in the bronze medal match.

Despite a spirited comeback effort, the Blitzboks couldn’t overcome the challenges they faced.

The game started out evenly matched, but the team was hit hard by two yellow cards in quick succession.

Shilton van Wyk was the first to be carded, followed by Ronald Brown less than 30 seconds later.

The penalties allowed Spain to capitalize, with Eduardo Lopez scoring soon after.

Despite being down a few key players, including injured Zane Davids, Zander Reynders, and Dewald Human, the Blitzboks didn’t give up.

Selvyn Davids scored South Africa’s only try midway through the second half, bringing them level.

However, Spain responded with a try from Juan Ramos, and the Blitzboks had no time left to retaliate.

Despite their best efforts, the final score was 14-7 in Spain’s favor.

Heartbreaking Extra-Time Loss to Australia

The Blitzboks also faced a dramatic defeat in their semi-final against Australia, a match that ended in extra time.

The South African team was heavily penalized, with nine penalties to Australia’s three, which slowed down their momentum throughout the game.

Australia took the lead early, but the Blitzboks answered quickly.

Selvyn Davids made a brilliant run and scored a try under the posts, leveling the game 7-7 at halftime.

In the second half, Davids struck again, scoring in the corner to give South Africa a 12-7 lead.

But in the dying seconds, Australia tied it up with a controversial try from Sidney Harvey.

Although the conversion attempt was wide, Australia had a chance to win when South Africa was penalized right in front of the posts.

Maurice Longbottom missed the penalty, sending the match into extra time.

Unfortunately, the Blitzboks struggled under the pressure of penalties, and after Ryan Oosthuizen was yellow-carded, Australia seized the opportunity, with Aden Ekanayake scoring the final try to seal the win at 17-12.

Blitzboks’ Effort and Hope for Future Tournaments

While the results were disappointing, the Blitzboks showed resilience throughout the tournament.

Despite missing key players and facing several challenges, they fought hard in both matches.

The team’s ability to bounce back after setbacks in the semi-final and continue to push forward in the bronze final was a testament to their character.
