South African Weather Service issues heavy rain warning as flash floods impact Gauteng and surrounding provinces

Residents in Gauteng and two other provinces have been urged to brace for more heavy rainfall this week as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issues a Yellow Level 2 warning.

This comes after intense downpours caused flash floods in parts of the region on Wednesday, disrupting traffic and raising safety concerns.

More Rain Expected in Gauteng, North West, and Free State

According to SAWS, the wet weather is expected to persist across Gauteng, North West, and parts of the Free State, bringing additional risks of localized flooding.

Johannesburg faces an 80% chance of rain on Thursday, particularly in the afternoon and evening, with temperatures remaining cool at a high of 22°C.

In Pretoria, thunderstorms are forecasted for the evening, with concerns about flash floods, especially around Centurion.

By Friday, rain chances slightly decrease to 60%, but the cooler weather remains, with a similar temperature peak of 22°C.

Emergency Services Urge Caution on Wet Roads

Despite the heavy rain, no major incidents have been reported so far, according to Johannesburg Emergency Services spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi.

However, he warned motorists to drive cautiously as wet and slippery roads increase the risk of accidents.

“Many roads are already flooded, especially in low-lying areas, and conditions remain hazardous,” Mulaudzi said.

He encouraged residents to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel in affected zones.
