Things are stirring in the world of British boxing TV rights.
If you’ve been following fights on Sky Sports lately, you might have noticed the buzz around promoter Ben Shalom and his company, Boxxer.
Well, it looks like some changes are on the horizon.
Sky Sports and Boxxer: Parting Ways?
After nearly four years of working together, Sky Sports is not planning to renew its exclusive broadcasting deal with Boxxer when it wraps up at the end of June.
That deal—worth a hefty £36 million—was originally struck in 2021, shortly after Sky’s long-time partnership with Eddie Hearn ended.
Now, with the contract expiring on June 30, multiple insiders have confirmed that Boxxer won’t be staying on as Sky’s exclusive boxing content provider.
Their final event under the current deal is set to be Callum Simpson’s European title fight against Ivan Zucco in Barnsley on Saturday, June 7.
Both Sides Keeping It Polite… For Now
Neither party is making too much noise about the split—at least, not publicly.
When approached, Sky Sports declined to comment.
Boxxer, however, did issue a friendly statement.
They described the last few years as a “hugely successful partnership” with Sky and praised themselves as “the UK’s fastest-growing and most innovative boxing promoter.”
The company also hinted that they’ll be announcing their next steps soon, as they head into a new broadcast cycle.
A New Direction for Sky Sports Boxing?
While the exclusivity may be ending, Sky isn’t shutting the door on Shalom completely.
Sources say discussions are still ongoing, and there could be future collaborations on a case-by-case basis.
Instead of sticking with one promoter, Sky may be shifting to a more flexible approach—picking up rights for major fights from a variety of promoters.
Controversies and Mixed Reactions
Shalom’s time with Sky hasn’t been without some bumps in the road.
There’s been chatter about Boxxer’s association with Mazhar Majeed, a figure infamous for his role in a cricket spot-fixing scandal.
Majeed currently advises Chris Eubank Jr., one of Boxxer’s top fighters, which has raised eyebrows in the boxing world.
Beyond that, some insiders have questioned the overall quality of Boxxer’s fight cards.
That said, Sky seems to have stood by their content, pointing to major bouts like Chris Eubank Jr. vs. Conor Benn and Kell Brook vs. Amir Khan in 2022 as key highlights.
So, What’s Next?
As the current deal wraps up, the big question is: what’s next for both Sky Sports and Boxxer?
Will Boxxer find a new broadcast home?
Will Sky successfully pivot to a mix-and-match fight schedule across multiple promoters?
Boxxer says an announcement is on the way.
Until then, fans will be watching closely to see how this shake-up changes the boxing landscape on UK television.
