Select Fashion moves ahead with shutting down over a dozen shops across the country after struggling with high street competition

The retail landscape in the UK continues to shift, with yet another high street fashion brand announcing a wave of store closures.

Select Fashion, known for its budget-friendly clothing, is set to shut down a dozen of its branches in the coming weeks.

This move is part of an ongoing effort to navigate financial struggles that have plagued the company in recent years.

A History of Financial Struggles

Select Fashion has faced its share of difficulties, with financial troubles dating back to 2019 when the company fell into administration.

The brand, owned by Turkish entrepreneur Cafer Mahiroğlu, was later rescued by Genus UK Limited.

However, challenges persisted, leading the retailer to enter a Company Voluntary Arrangement (CVA) last summer.

A CVA is a financial restructuring strategy that allows businesses to renegotiate their debts, including rent agreements with landlords, to stay afloat.

Despite these efforts, Select Fashion has continued to face the harsh realities of the changing retail market, resulting in the latest round of closures.

Which Stores Are Closing?

Twelve Select Fashion stores across the UK are set to shut their doors between February and March.

The majority of the affected locations are in the North East of England. Among the stores confirmed for closure are:

  • South Shields
  • Peterlee
  • Thornaby
  • Hartlepool
  • Scarborough
  • Hull Hessle
  • Hull St Stephens
  • Ashington
  • Scunthorpe

Some stores, including those in Wolverhampton and Kidderminster, have already ceased operations.

Additional closures are scheduled in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales, and Wellingborough, with the latter expected to close by March 15.

Reports also indicate that the Chippenham branch in Wiltshire will soon shut down.

A Pattern of Closures

This latest wave of shutdowns follows a series of closures Select Fashion carried out in 2023.

Several locations, including Ipswich, Kent, and Cwmbran, were closed last year, along with the Erith Riverside Shopping Centre branch in London.

Founded in the early 1980s, Select Fashion has built a reputation for offering affordable clothing, accessories, and footwear.

Despite the closures, the brand still operates around 105 stores across the UK.

What’s Next for Select Fashion?

With the retail sector continuing to evolve and consumer habits shifting towards online shopping, Select Fashion’s future remains uncertain.

The company has yet to comment on whether further closures are on the horizon.

For now, customers in affected areas will need to find alternative shopping options as another well-known brand scales back its presence on the high street.
