Scottish music legend John Reid dies unexpectedly at age 61 as tributes pour in from artists across Glasgow and beyond

The music world has lost a true voice from the golden age of 90s dance anthems.

John Reid, the Scottish producer, DJ, and singer behind the legendary Nightcrawlers hit Push The Feeling On, has sadly died at the age of 61.

A Glasgow Star Who Took His Sound Global

Born in Glasgow and educated at Crookston Castle, Reid made waves in the music industry not just with his own vocals, but also behind the scenes as a songwriter.

He co-wrote the 1999 Tina Turner hit When the Heartache Is Over, and contributed songs for Rod Stewart, Westlife (Unbreakable), and even co-penned A Moment Like This, which became a major hit for both Kelly Clarkson and Leona Lewis.

His reach extended further into the pop world with songwriting credits for acts like Eternal, Claire Richards (My Heart Is Heading Home This Christmas), Gemini, and boyband Bad Boys Inc, collaborating at one point with music mogul Simon Cowell and producer Ian Levine.

A Nightcrawler Classic That Refused to Fade

Reid’s voice became instantly recognizable through Push The Feeling On, a track that defined 90s club culture.

While it found initial success, the song exploded again thanks to later remixes by underground producers like JCA and Rosabot.

It made a comeback on the U.S. Dance Chart, eventually hitting number one.

In the years that followed, Push The Feeling On lived on through samples and remixes, including collaborations with Big Narstie and features in viral tracks like Friday by Riton, Mufasa & Hypeman.

For club-goers, it became — and remains — a timeless anthem.

Remembering a First Love and a Creative Partner

Mary Kiani, a fellow Scottish vocalist and former fiancée of Reid, shared a deeply personal tribute online.

Now living in Australia, Mary reminisced about their young love, musical journey, and the flat they bought together in Glasgow’s Dennistoun.

“We met in Glasgow but fell in love in London,” she wrote.

“We recorded, we toured, we built something special. The Nightcrawlers were born during that time.”

Mary last saw John just last year in Glasgow. “I told him I wanted to say hello before one of us died,” she wrote.

“I’m glad I got that chance. RIP John. Love, Bubbs.”

A Voice Remembered by His Peers

Chris Judge, best known as Susan Boyle’s vocal coach and a singer with the Red Hot Chilli Pipers, also shared his grief.

Recalling his early days in boybands, he described Reid as someone who was always kind, talented, and generous with his encouragement.

“John wasn’t just a hitmaker,” he said, “he was an incredible singer and a well-respected session musician.

He worked with legends, and still made time for newcomers.”

Judge also highlighted Reid’s legacy of hit songwriting — from Tina Turner to Pitbull, and everything in between — calling him a defining force of 90s session culture alongside Mary Kiani.

Cause of Death Not Yet Confirmed

As of now, no cause of death has been revealed.

Reid’s passing has left a noticeable silence in the music world, but his work — both as a writer and a performer — continues to resonate across generations.
