Scarlett Moffatt has spoken candidly about a deeply painful chapter in her life, revealing that she suffered a miscarriage after the birth of her son Jude — a loss that ultimately led her to decide she will not try for another child.
The 35-year-old TV personality, best known for rising to fame on Channel 4’s Gogglebox, welcomed Jude with her partner Scott Dobinson in 2023. While motherhood brought her immense joy, Scarlett has now shared that the emotional toll of losing a pregnancy afterward was something she could not face again.
The pregnancy she had already started to imagine
Speaking openly, Scarlett explained that the miscarriage happened later than many people realise these losses can occur — after she and Scott had already shared their news and allowed themselves to dream.
“We had told people and we were really excited,” she said. “We had talked about what life would be like, how they would run down the stairs together as siblings at Christmas.”
She described mourning not just the pregnancy itself, but the future she had already pictured so clearly — the routines, the memories, the family moments that would never arrive.
The moment she knew she had reached her limit
Scarlett said there came a quiet, honest moment between her and Scott when she accepted she could not go through that heartbreak again.
“I was lying in bed with Scott one day and I said, ‘I just don’t think I can handle the heartbreak any more,’” she explained. “‘I think we should stop. We’ve got Jude, so let’s enjoy him.’”
She added that her heart goes out to anyone who continues trying after loss, calling that choice “brave” and acknowledging how emotionally devastating the experience can be.
A traumatic birth that left its own scars
The miscarriage was not Scarlett’s first brush with fear around pregnancy. She has previously spoken about the traumatic birth of Jude, which involved severe complications.
During labour, she suffered what she described as “significant blood loss,” losing around a litre and a half of blood. Despite hoping to avoid a transfusion, the experience left her weak and disoriented at a moment when her newborn needed urgent care.
Rushing to NICU against medical advice
Jude was born early at just over 35 weeks and was quickly taken to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with low blood sugar levels and jaundice.
Scarlett recalled wheeling herself down to NICU despite being barely stable, determined to be with her baby. “Scott was like, ‘What are you doing? Get in bed,’” she said — but she couldn’t bring herself to stay away.
Gratitude for the care that got them through
Since then, Scarlett has repeatedly expressed her appreciation for NICU staff, crediting them with helping her son through a frightening start to life.
Marking NICU Awareness Month on Instagram, she described Jude as her “little miracle baby” and thanked the team at Durham Hospital for their care, singling out staff members who supported her family during those anxious early days.
She has also lent her voice to campaigns recognising neonatal care workers, saying she wants to help spotlight the people who go above and beyond for premature and vulnerable babies.
A family reshaped around Jude
Scarlett and Scott got engaged in 2023, just months after Jude’s birth, and are planning to marry next year. Their life now revolves firmly around their son — a choice they have embraced together.
Earlier this month, Scarlett revealed that Scott has stepped away from his job as a police officer to become a full-time stay-at-home dad, allowing her to return to work after taking two years off to focus solely on motherhood.
Finding balance between work and parenthood
Scarlett said those two years at home were “the best,” but admitted she eventually missed adult conversation and felt the pressure of staying relevant in a demanding industry.
With Scott now taking the lead at home — and help from supportive grandparents — she says they are “somehow managing” and feeling grateful for the balance they’ve found.
Speaking openly so others feel less alone
By sharing her story, Scarlett has joined many women using their platform to talk honestly about miscarriage, grief, and the complicated decisions that follow.
