SASSA Implements New Measures to Help Beneficiaries in South Africa Meet Payment Method Change Deadline by March 2025

SASSA has just announced some key changes to assist beneficiaries who need help switching their grant payment methods before the upcoming deadline.

With the deadline for switching payment methods set for 20 March 2025, SASSA is stepping in to offer support to those struggling with the process.

Here’s what’s changing and how it might help you.

How SASSA is Supporting Beneficiaries

The main responsibility for helping beneficiaries switch their payment methods lies with Postbank.

However, SASSA has recognized that many people are having difficulty completing the necessary changes, so they’re stepping up to provide additional assistance.

Nokuzola Tolashe, the Minister of Social Development, emphasized that it’s important to focus on solutions instead of assigning blame during this challenging time.

The goal is to help everyone meet the deadline and ensure that vulnerable groups, such as older individuals and those with disabilities, receive the support they need.

“We want to work together with all stakeholders to find a sustainable solution for this challenge,” said Tolashe.

“We encourage committee members to alert us if people are facing difficulties so we can intervene quickly.”

What’s Being Done to Help?

SASSA is implementing a few practical steps to ease the process for beneficiaries.

One of the main actions includes having SASSA staff present at Postbank collection sites to assist with the payment method switch.

In addition, SASSA is extending the operating hours of their Social Grant Payment System to make sure beneficiaries have more time to get their requests processed.

Themba Matlou, SASSA’s Acting CEO, shared that two SASSA employees will be stationed at each site to help manage queues, with a focus on assisting older and frail individuals.

The extended hours for the payment system will be from 6:00 AM to 7:30 PM, including weekends, and will continue until April 2025.

Matlou also confirmed that any backlogs in payment method changes will be cleared by 21 February.

Additionally, SASSA will roll out a Community Outreach Programme to support beneficiaries in rural areas.
