SASSA announces official social grant payment dates for millions of beneficiaries in South Africa for April 2025

Millions of South Africans rely on social grants to make ends meet, and with April 2025 fast approaching, beneficiaries are eager to know when they’ll receive their payments.

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has officially announced the payment dates for April, ensuring that recipients can plan ahead.

Where and How to Receive Your Grant

SASSA distributes grants through various methods, giving beneficiaries flexibility in accessing their money.

Payments can be collected at selected supermarkets, including Pick n Pay, Boxer, USave merchants, Checkers, and Shoprite.

Beneficiaries also have the option to receive their funds via a SASSA card, through CashSend, or directly into their personal bank account.

Official SASSA Payment Dates for April 2025

Social grants are typically increased every April in line with the government’s budget allocations.

Although the 2025/2026 Budget Speech has been delayed due to ongoing discussions about a proposed VAT increase, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana has assured that social grants will still be adjusted.

Here’s the confirmed payment schedule for April 2025:

  • Old age grant – 2 April 2025

  • Disability grant – 3 April 2025

  • Child support grant and others – 4 April 2025

Social Grant Increases for 2025

The government has allocated R284.7 billion for social grants in the 2025/2026 financial year. These increases will take effect starting 1 April 2025:

  • COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress Grant: R370

  • Old age grant: Increases by R130 to R2,315

  • Disability grant: Also increases by R130

  • Child support grant: Goes up by R30 to R560

  • Foster care grant: Increases by R70

What If You Haven’t Switched to the Postbank Black Card?

SASSA had previously instructed beneficiaries using the old gold SASSA card to switch to the new Postbank-issued black card by 20 March 2025.

However, for those who haven’t made the switch, there’s still a way to access your grant.

Postbank CEO Nikki Mbengashe assured the public that from April 2025 onwards, those without the new card will still be able to withdraw their grants from their nearest South African Post Office branch.

There are currently 543 Post Office branches available nationwide to assist with these transactions.

To withdraw your grant at a Post Office, you’ll need to present one of the following:

  • Green barcoded ID

  • Smart card ID

  • Temporary ID

Who Can Still Collect Grants at the Post Office?

While most beneficiaries are encouraged to use their Postbank black card at ATMs and retailers, Post Office withdrawals will be limited to:

  • Social grant recipients who have not yet switched to the black card

  • Asylum seekers

  • Postbank green Mzansi or blue card beneficiaries
