Embalo will be making his first state visit to the country. Mphakama Mbete, South Africa’s ambassador in Guinea Bissau, says the meeting is crucial.

“It’s critical because the better our bilateral links in various sectors, such as between Guinea Bissau and South Africa, the more good impact it will have on other west African nations, which, as you know, face numerous challenges.”

Mbete says the country’s President Umaro Embaló wants to work with Pretoria to also strengthen their security.

In the video below, UN SG expresses deep concern about news of heavy fighting in Guinea Bissau:

This comes after a failed coup attempt in the country lately. According to Mbete, several places in the country require attention…

“Defense is critical because one of the most pressing issues they have faced since their independence in 1973/1974 has been in the field of defense and security. And I believe that the closer links they have built with South Africa would have a favorable impact on their security and political stability.”
