Wednesday, September 28th, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in parts of the Eastern Cape.

According to the weather service, the warning is in place from 13:00 to 23:59 Thursday, September 29.

The Eastern Cape is anticipated to have showers and thunderstorms due to a surface trough over the interior of South Africa and upper-air disturbances.

“There is a potential of the expected storms being severe in the east, where heavy downpours, damaging winds and large amounts of small hail may be possible,” said the weather service.

Amathoe, OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo, and portions of Chris Hani and Joe Gqabi are the impacted district municipalities in the Eastern Cape.

Potential impacts of the thunderstorms include:

  • Damage to infrastructure or structures, settlements, property and vehicles.
  • Localised flooding of vulnerable roads and low-lying areas and bridges.
  • Travel disruption.
  • Loss of livestock in isolated cases.
