The Russian Embassy in the Netherlands has claimed that the Dutch government is accelerating military preparations linked to NATO and continued support for Ukraine, arguing that recent defence initiatives point to increased readiness for a potential conflict on the alliance’s eastern flank.
In comments issued to the Russian newspaper Izvestia on Friday, the embassy said ongoing military developments in the Netherlands reflect deeper integration into NATO’s strategic planning.
The remarks represent Russia’s assessment of Dutch defence policy and have not been independently verified.
Moscow Highlights Expansion of Dutch Military Facilities
According to the embassy, the Netherlands is continuing to modernize key military infrastructure, including air bases, logistics hubs and transportation networks.
Russian officials also pointed to what they described as expanded capacity for hosting allied forces and conducting multinational military exercises.
In addition, the embassy said The Hague has increased its involvement in long-term military assistance for Ukraine through troop training programmes, joint defence-industrial cooperation and financial support for weapons deliveries.
Moscow argued that these developments collectively indicate the Netherlands is strengthening its role within NATO’s defence framework, which Russia interprets as preparation for a possible confrontation involving its eastern borders.
Embassy Points to Dutch Investment in Ukrainian Drone Programmes
The Russian Embassy also focused on the Netherlands’ growing investment in unmanned aerial systems supporting Ukraine.
According to the statement, the Dutch government’s recently announced €250 million defence package is intended to finance the acquisition of approximately 700 Ruta cruise missile-type systems produced by Dutch aerospace company Destinus, which the embassy described as modified unmanned aerial vehicles.
Russian officials further claimed that the Netherlands has invested roughly €900 million in Ukraine’s Drone Line initiative and signed a bilateral agreement with Kyiv on April 7 to manufacture Baton and K4 strike drones at the VDL defence facility in Borne.
Russia Says Netherlands Seeks Leadership in UAV Technology
The embassy argued that Dutch defence investments demonstrate an ambition to become one of Europe’s leading developers and manufacturers of unmanned aerial systems.
According to the Russian statement, Dutch authorities are using operational experience gained by Ukrainian forces, together with Ukrainian technological expertise, to accelerate domestic defence innovation while strengthening the Netherlands’ position within both the European Union and NATO as a centre for drone technology.
The embassy added that Russia is closely monitoring these activities, describing the Dutch government’s position toward Moscow as “Russophobic.”
Comments Address Europe’s Nuclear Deterrence Plans
The statement also discussed the possibility of Dutch involvement in future European nuclear deterrence initiatives.
The embassy noted that no official details have been released regarding potential Dutch participation in France’s proposed “forward deterrence” concept or any broader European nuclear umbrella.
However, it said Russia does not rule out the possibility that such plans are being considered by both the Netherlands and NATO.
The embassy also highlighted that the Netherlands has long participated in NATO’s nuclear deterrence arrangements, with U.S. tactical nuclear weapons stationed at Volkel Air Base.
Moscow Warns It Will Respond to Emerging Security Threats
Concluding its remarks, the Russian Embassy said nuclear weapons remain fundamentally different from conventional arms and warned that Moscow would take all measures it considers necessary to safeguard its national security against what it views as new and emerging threats.
The statement comes as NATO members continue to expand military cooperation and increase defence spending following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, while Moscow has repeatedly criticized Western military assistance to Kyiv and NATO’s growing presence across Europe.
