Ruben Amorim Urges Manchester United to Improve Transfer Strategy and Academy Development as He Addresses Current Challenges at Old Trafford

As Manchester United navigates through a turbulent period, manager Ruben Amorim has sent a clear message to the club: improvement is needed in both their transfer strategy and youth development efforts.

Amorim’s Mixed Start at Old Trafford

Since taking over at Old Trafford from Sporting Lisbon in November, Amorim has faced challenges, achieving only four wins and six losses in his first 12 matches in charge.

Despite this rocky start, the club recognizes the importance of allowing him time to build his vision for the future, especially after enduring a difficult chapter in their history.

Transfer Business Needs a Rethink

Currently sitting 13th in the Premier League, United’s struggles are not just confined to results on the pitch.

They haven’t claimed a league title since the 2012-13 season and have often missed out on Champions League qualification in recent years.

Despite heavy investment in the transfer market, some big-money signings, like £85 million Antony, £60 million Angel Di Maria, and £73 million Jadon Sancho, have failed to deliver.

Ahead of the FA Cup clash with Arsenal, Amorim made it clear that United must step up their recruitment efforts.

“We need to improve recruitment,” he emphasized, pointing out the importance of targeting players who can meet the club’s demands and fit into the team’s system.

Strengthening the Academy

Manchester United has a rich history of youth development, and under Amorim’s leadership, the focus on nurturing homegrown talent remains strong.

Players like Alejandro Garnacho, Marcus Rashford, and Kobbie Mainoo have all come through the academy and made their mark in the first team.

However, recent reports suggest that United may be open to selling Mainoo and Garnacho if lucrative offers come in, especially with the club facing Financial Fair Play (FFP) challenges.

Despite this, Amorim has made it clear that he values these young players, particularly Mainoo, and is keen on further enhancing the academy’s contribution to the first team.

“We have to improve our academy, young kids that feel the club in the right way,” he said.

“Our idea is always to keep the best players and build for this club.”

Uncertainty Surrounding Rashford’s Future

Meanwhile, Marcus Rashford’s future at United remains uncertain.

The 27-year-old forward has been sidelined for the last six games, and speculation about a possible January exit has been rife after he hinted at seeking a new challenge.

Amorim, when asked about Rashford’s potential return for Sunday’s match against Arsenal, was tight-lipped.

“We will see guys. Let’s focus on the game. They are available, they are training, we will see for this game.”

What’s Next for Manchester United?

With the January transfer window approaching, all eyes will be on how United navigates these crucial decisions regarding both player recruitment and youth development.

Amorim’s emphasis on long-term planning and improvement suggests that this is just the beginning of a larger project to restore the club to its former glory.
