Ruben Amorim isn’t buying into the idea that Manchester United will have to wait over a decade to challenge for the Premier League crown.
His comments come in response to Sir Alex Ferguson’s recent interview in Bahrain, where the legendary manager suggested that it could take “10 or 11 years” for the Red Devils to return to the very top of English football.
Amorim, however, is confident that United won’t have to wait that long.
“Sir Alex understands football far more than I do, especially English football,” he said.
“But I don’t think it will take that long to win a league.
I don’t know which manager will be in charge, but I truly believe we will be fighting for the title in the next few years.”
Standing by Bruno Fernandes
The United manager also addressed recent remarks from captain Bruno Fernandes.
In an interview with the Portuguese Football Federation, Fernandes suggested that some players at the club don’t value or defend the team as much as he does.
Amorim defended his compatriot, praising Fernandes as a role model for the squad.
“I don’t know if it is fair to comment,” Amorim said.
“He spoke about his feelings and he needs to answer for that, not me. But he is an example.
He puts everything on the line in every training session and every match. He’s a special character.”
The manager also stressed that other players at Manchester United should follow Fernandes’ lead, showing similar passion and commitment.
Injury Updates and Squad Challenges
Looking ahead to United’s upcoming trip to Aston Villa, Amorim confirmed that both Harry Maguire and Matthijs de Ligt will not be fit in time for the match.
The squad also faces absences due to international duty, with Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo joining Noussair Mazraoui at the Africa Cup of Nations.
On top of that, Casemiro will miss the game through suspension, leaving Amorim with some tough selection choices.
Ferguson Reflects on United’s Rebuilding Timeline
Speaking to Press Box PR, Sir Alex Ferguson highlighted the long-term challenges of rebuilding a football club.
“He [Amorim] is a good personality, but it is not easy,” Ferguson said.
“I remember when Liverpool were dominating and winning the European Cup four times.
Even then, it took them 31 years to win the league again. We are now in a similar situation.
It could be ten years, could be 11 years, because of the cycle.
Recruitment has to be thought out carefully and better than it was in the past.”
Amorim clearly sees things differently, though.
While Ferguson emphasizes patience and planning, the Portuguese coach is already setting his sights on a quicker return to title contention.
