Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur took to social media in the early hours of Thursday morning to calm concerned fans following a worrying injury during his team’s 1-0 victory over Liverpool in the Carabao Cup semi-final.
The Injury Incident
The 27-year-old sustained the injury just five minutes into the match while attempting a header at the near post from a Tottenham corner.
He seemed to fall awkwardly, leaving him motionless on the pitch.
The quick reaction from his teammates, who urgently signaled for medical staff, raised immediate concern.
The medical team responded promptly, treating Bentancur for approximately nine minutes before he was carried off the field on a stretcher to applause from both sets of supporters.
Tottenham confirmed later that Bentancur had been taken to the hospital for further scans, leaving fans anxiously waiting for news of his condition.
Bentancur’s Reassuring Message
Amid the anxiety, Bentancur shared a reassuring message on social media to ease the worries of his followers.
Posting a smiling photo alongside his fiancée, Melany La Banca, he wrote: “All good, guys! Thank you for the messages!!! Congratulations for the victory boys!!!”
Bentancur and La Banca, who met in 2014 and began their relationship in 2015 while he was playing for Boca Juniors in Argentina, also share a two-year-old daughter.
A Relief for Fans
Bentancur’s positive update came as a relief after the lengthy treatment he required.
This match marked his return to action after serving a one-match suspension for accumulating five yellow cards in the season’s earlier matches, including Tottenham’s defeat to Newcastle.
Prior to that, Bentancur had faced a seven-match ban following an alleged racial slur towards his teammate Son Heung-min in an interview in Uruguay.
Although the exact timeline for his return remains unclear, seeing Bentancur smiling and sitting up in bed is a welcome sight for his supporters.
Match Details and Late Drama
In the same match, Liverpool defender Jarell Quansah required medical attention after feeling unwell, leading to a lengthy stoppage time of 11 minutes.
The second half saw a dramatic finish, with Spurs securing a narrow 1-0 win.
Tottenham were initially denied by an offside call when Dominic Solanke thought he had scored for Liverpool.
However, Lucas Bergvall broke the deadlock in the 86th minute, following excellent play from Solanke.
Liverpool were left frustrated, believing Bergvall should have been sent off just moments earlier for a foul on Kostas Tsimikas.
Despite the controversy, Bergvall remained on the pitch and delivered the decisive moment of the match, much to Tottenham’s and Bentancur’s delight.
What’s Next?
With the first leg now in the books, Tottenham heads into the second leg at Anfield with a slight advantage.
Fans will be eagerly awaiting updates on Bentancur’s recovery as they prepare for the return fixture next month.
