RIP | Cape Epic rocked by tragic death of rider

According to a statement by the organisers, the rider required critical care and was attended to by the medical team and airlifted to a nearby hospital where he received further treatment.

“Despite best medical efforts, the athlete passed today. We share our greatest sympathies with the family and friends of the rider and will continue to offer them our support as they go through this very difficult time.

“We thank the medical personnel who provided the rider with continuous medical support and care,” the statement said.

The 2022 Cape Epic will conclude on Sunday, 27 March

Stage 1 started and finished at Lourensford Wine Estate.

The 92km stage included 2 850m of climbing and was held in extreme temperatures which reached 40 degrees Celsius. A number of teams fail to finish.

This year’s Cape Epic will finish on Sunday, 27 March at Val de Vie Estate in Franschhoek.
