Residents of Sandpiper Complex in Montana Struggle to Rebuild Lives After Devastating Pretoria Tornado Leaves Homes Destroyed

The recent tornado in Pretoria left many residents in Montana facing the aftermath of destruction and loss.

One of the hardest-hit areas was the Sandpiper complex, where numerous people were forced to evacuate as the storm wreaked havoc on their homes.

Evacuated Residents Open Up About Their Loss

On February 19, 2025, Newzroom Afrika spoke with several residents of the Sandpiper complex, who were left trying to salvage what was left of their homes.

One of them shared her feelings of frustration and sadness after learning her home had been severely damaged by the tornado.

“I’m frustrated. I’m very sad. It’s my home.

It might not be much, but it’s my home, you know? And now, I have to pack everything up and figure out where to go,” she explained.

Although she was fortunate to not be home when the tornado hit, the damage was overwhelming.

To make matters worse, all their household appliances were destroyed due to the ongoing heavy rains in Gauteng.

While she and her family were able to find alternative accommodation, many others are still uncertain about their next steps.

The Emotional Toll of Losing Everything

Another resident, a university student from the East Rand, described the emotional impact of the tornado. Her belongings, along with those of her roommate, were destroyed by the storm.

Like many others, she is struggling to find a new place to stay.

“It’s really not nice to come home and there’s nothing left,” she said, echoing the deep sense of loss and frustration many are feeling in the wake of this disaster.
