Rassie Erasmus Receives the FW De Klerk Foundation Goodwill Award for Uniting South Africans and Leading the Springboks to Victory

Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus has been recognized for his role in uniting South Africans, accepting the FW De Klerk Foundation’s Goodwill Award.

This honor comes after Erasmus, despite his remarkable achievements, was overlooked for the World Rugby Coach of the Year title.

A Humble Acceptance

On February 1, 2025, Rassie Erasmus received the award at the FW De Klerk Foundation’s annual conference, marking a significant occasion that coincided with the 35th anniversary of the late president’s speech that initiated transformation in South Africa.

True to his character, Erasmus accepted the award on behalf of his entire team, taking to Twitter to express his gratitude, saying, “We are humbled as a group! Lekka.”

The Reasons Behind the Award

The FW De Klerk Foundation presented the award to Erasmus in recognition of his “passion, devotion, and brilliance” in leading the Springboks to back-to-back World Cup victories in 2019 and 2023.

The foundation highlighted Erasmus’ ability to inspire people across all walks of life, fostering pride and contributing to nation-building.

It noted that the values Erasmus embodies—non-racialism, meritocracy, humility, and patriotism—align with the ideals promoted by the FW De Klerk Foundation.

FW De Klerk’s Legacy and Erasmus’ Role

The foundation, which preserves the legacy of the late FW de Klerk, sees Erasmus as a shining example of the core values de Klerk championed during his presidency.

These values include mutual respect, tolerance, perseverance, teamwork, leadership, and serving the greater good.

The foundation believes that Erasmus exemplifies these principles through his leadership and work with the Springboks.

Previous Honors and Recognition

Rassie Erasmus’ accolades don’t end with the Goodwill Award.

Last year, he was also awarded an honorary doctorate in Coaching Science from North West University, further cementing his place as one of the leading figures in South African sports.

Responding to the Snub

After being excluded from the Coach of the Year shortlist at the World Rugby Awards in December, Erasmus responded with grace and humility.

In a voice note posted on X, he emphasized the importance of staying humble and supporting one another.

“We play for you guys and for South Africa,” he shared, acknowledging the support of both local fans and those abroad who understand the values the Springboks represent.

Erasmus concluded by reminding everyone that, at the end of the day, rugby is just a game that unites the nation.
