The Commonwealth Games opening ceremony in Birmingham, England, will be missed by Queen Elizabeth.

The 96-year-old British monarch, who has served as the Head of the Commonwealth since 1952, has reportedly informed the Palace that she will not be present for the multi-sport games’ opening ceremony on Thursday, July 28, according to the ITV website.

Instead, Prince Charles, who is first in line to the throne, will speak in place of his mother and be accompanied by his wife, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.

The 73-year-old prince will also read a message from Her Royal Highness, which has travelled to all 72 Commonwealth countries and territories and is carried in the games baton.

The Prince of Wales praised the athletic event last month, calling it a demonstration of “unity” in these uncertain times.

He said, “In a world currently riven by conflict and division, these Games – so aptly called ‘the friendly games’ – stand as a shining celebration of our unity, our diversity and our pursuit of shared excellence.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and other royal family members will also be there.

Due to her current mobility concerns and frequent usage of a walking aid, Queen Elizabeth has missed a number of events.
