…By Dorcas Funmi for TDPel Media. The outgoing Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has expressed his appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for signing the Student’s Loan (Access to Higher Education) Bill, 2019 into law.
In a statement released by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Lanre Lasisi, Gbajabiamila praised the President for his commitment to good governance and his efforts in enacting legislation that positively impacts the lives of Nigerians.
Securing the Future of Nigerian Students:
Gbajabiamila emphasized that the new law guarantees and strengthens the future of the country.
He highlighted that no Nigerian child would be deprived of access to tertiary education due to financial constraints.
As the sponsor of the bill, he commended President Tinubu for demonstrating determination and empathy towards Nigerians by swiftly signing life-changing legislation into law since assuming office.
Overcoming Barriers to Quality Education:
The Speaker acknowledged the challenges faced by unemployed individuals and low-income earners, compounded by the high cost of living in Nigeria.
He stated that these factors have made it increasingly difficult, stressful, and sometimes impossible to obtain a quality higher education.
Gbajabiamila stressed the significance of an educated population in national development and the country’s ability to compete in the global economy.
He argued that higher education should be viewed as a public good that benefits the entire nation, rather than a commodity exclusively for individual recipients.
The Establishment of the Nigerian Education Fund:
Under the new legislation, the Nigerian Education Fund will be established and housed within the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
This fund will enable eligible applicants to access education loans through commercial banks in the country.
Gbajabiamila applauded this provision, as it will provide financial assistance to deserving students pursuing higher education.
A Harmonious Legislature-Executive Relationship:
Gbajabiamila, who is also the Chief of Staff (CoS) designate to President Tinubu, viewed the President’s assent to the bill as evidence of a smooth relationship between the legislature and the executive during his tenure.
He expressed his belief that such a symbiotic relationship has led to significant governance changes within a short period.
Gbajabiamila congratulated Nigerians on this achievement and urged economically disadvantaged youth to make the most of the opportunities provided by the new law to shape their desired future.
Continued Support for President Tinubu:
While appreciating President Tinubu’s patriotic steps and decisions thus far, Gbajabiamila called on Nigerians to continue supporting and praying for the President as he strives to implement good governance for the betterment of the majority.
He expressed optimism that with the continued collaboration between the Legislature and the Executive, Nigerians will experience positive change in governance.
