Pope Francis has once again emphasized the need to defend the rights of Indigenous communities, stating that it is not only a matter of justice but also essential for ensuring a sustainable future for all.

In a heartfelt message on Monday, he spoke about the deep connection Indigenous people have with their land, water, and food, stressing that these are not mere commodities but fundamental to life itself.

A Message to the Global Indigenous Peoples’ Forum

His remarks were directed at participants in the Seventh Global Meeting of the Indigenous Peoples’ Forum, which is being held in Rome from February 10–11.

The event, organized by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), aims to strengthen collaboration with Indigenous communities and advance initiatives that support their well-being.

Valuing Ancestral Heritage and Traditions

Pope Francis highlighted the importance of recognizing Indigenous peoples’ invaluable contributions to the world.

Their ancestral knowledge and traditions, he noted, add richness to the global human family and offer hope in challenging times.

He pointed out that protecting their culture and identity is directly linked to safeguarding their existence and the natural resources they rely upon.

A Call for a Sustainable Future

The theme of the two-day meeting, “The Right of Indigenous Peoples to Self-Determination: A Path to Food Security and Food Sovereignty,” serves as a reminder of the vital role these communities play in preserving ecological balance and promoting sustainability.

Pope Francis called on people worldwide to respect and uphold Indigenous rights, ensuring that future generations inherit a world that reflects the beauty and goodness of its original creation.

A Hope for Collective Action

Concluding his message, Pope Francis expressed his hope that global efforts will focus on maintaining a just and harmonious world where Indigenous communities thrive.

He urged individuals and institutions alike to work toward a future that honors the deep-rooted wisdom of Indigenous cultures while promoting environmental and social sustainability.
