Plastic Surgery Studies Reveal Shift in Preferences for Ideal Buttocks in America

Plastic surgeons have conducted two studies shedding light on the type of buttocks Americans find most attractive.

Despite societal beauty standards influenced by the ‘Kardashian effect,’ the research suggests that size is not the sole determinant of an aesthetically pleasing female derriere.

Women’s Ideal Buttocks: A Waist-to-Hip Ratio of 0.65

Surgeons from Loma Linda University in California conducted one study involving 1,100 participants, assessing their preferences for digitally generated female buttocks.

The results indicated that a ‘waist to hip’ ratio of 0.65 was deemed the most attractive. This ratio, representing a more narrow waist flaring slightly into the hips, contrasts with extreme proportions often associated with A-list celebrities.

Shift in Preferences for Brazilian Butt Lifts (BBLs)

Dr. Marc Everett, a New York City plastic surgeon, commented on the changing trend in buttock enhancement procedures.

While the mid-2010s witnessed the popularity of Brazilian Butt Lifts, there is now a shift towards more modest size fat transfers.

Some patients even seek to reverse their procedures due to remorse over exaggerated results or sagging buttocks attributed to aging.

The Influence of Celebrities and Changing Trends

The surge in Brazilian Butt Lifts was notably influenced by celebrities like Khloe Kardashian, Cardi B, and K.Michelle. However, with a shift in fashion, some celebrities have opted to reverse their procedures.

Khloe Kardashian, for instance, appeared with a slimmer figure in 2022. The popularity of BBLs has risen significantly, from nearly 4,000 in 2011 to 61,000 in 2021.

Scientific Approach to Butt Size: Waist-to-Hip Ratios in Focus

In the first study, scientists digitally altered images to create buttocks with varying waist-to-hip ratios.

Participants, mainly from the U.S., overwhelmingly favored a ratio of 0.65, indicating a buttocks about 35 percent larger than the waist.

The study found no significant differences in preferences based on age, gender, or ethnicity.

Men’s Ideal Buttocks: Moderately Sized with Defined Muscles

Another study involved 2,000 participants rating digitally generated male buttocks. The ideal male buttocks, according to the study led by Dr. Ashit Patel, was perceived as ‘moderately enhanced’ and ‘well-proportioned.’

Preferences were determined by factors like the gluteal trochanteric index (GTI), with a ratio of 0.66 being the most popular.

Regional Variances and Rising Interest in Male Buttock Enhancements

The study on male buttocks revealed regional differences, with those in southern U.S. areas more likely to prefer a more voluptuous male buttocks.

Interest in male buttock enhancements has risen in recent years, with the proportion of such surgeries on men increasing from 2.2 percent in 1997 to 6.2 percent in 2012.

These studies provide valuable insights into evolving preferences for buttock aesthetics, shaping discussions around cosmetic procedures and societal standards.
