“Phil Collins Shares Heartbreaking Update on His Health and Declares He No Longer Wants to Make Music Due to Ongoing Illness in Los Angeles”

Phil Collins has opened up about the challenges he’s facing with his health and how it has affected his music career.

After stepping away from playing the drums in 2022 due to physical limitations, the legendary Genesis frontman shared a painful truth: he no longer has the desire to make music.

Health Struggles Lead to Loss of Musical Passion

In a candid interview with MOJO magazine, Collins, now 74, explained that while he used to have a passion for making music, it has since faded.

“I keep thinking I should go downstairs to the studio and see what happens,” he said.

“But I’m just not hungry for it anymore.”

Collins revealed that his health problems have weighed heavily on him, leaving him unable to find the same drive he once had.

“I’ve been sick, I mean really sick,” he admitted. His health challenges are tied to his battle with type 2 diabetes and the complications stemming from a spine injury he sustained in 2007.

Collins had previously shared with Daily Mail in 2009 that his vertebrae had been crushing his spinal cord due to his drumming position.

This injury, which developed over years of playing, has made even holding the drumsticks unbearably painful.

A Storied Career Cut Short by Illness

Collins’ health struggles have certainly taken a toll on him, but his legendary career spans decades of success and groundbreaking achievements.

As the frontman for Genesis, Collins helped the band release eight hit albums, winning numerous prestigious awards.

He also became a celebrated solo artist, collecting eight Grammy awards, six Brit Awards, and even an Oscar for his iconic hit “You’ll Be In My Heart.”

However, in the wake of his physical decline, Collins’ musical journey has come to a stop.

He shared in the documentary Phil Collins: Drummer First, which premiered in December, how difficult it was for him to come to terms with his limitations.

The film, which documented Genesis’ final concert tour, showed Collins singing from a chair while his son Nic took over drumming duties. “It’s still kind of sinking in a bit,” Collins reflected in the documentary.

“I’ve spent all my life playing drums, and suddenly not being able to do that is a shock.”

Collins Reflects on a Legendary Career

Phil Collins’ musical journey began long before his fame with Genesis.

He first entered the entertainment world at age 13 when he played the Artful Dodger in the musical Oliver! on London’s West End in 1964.

His love for drumming began at a young age, and by 1970, Collins joined Genesis as their drummer, eventually taking over as the band’s frontman after Peter Gabriel left in 1975.

Through all the highs and lows, Collins made an indelible mark on the music world.

His story is one of perseverance, dedication, and incredible success.

But, as Collins now faces a reality where he can no longer perform the way he once did, he is forced to reckon with the end of an era in his life.

“Phil Collins: Drummer First” is available to stream on YouTube, offering fans a deeply personal look into the journey of one of music’s greatest icons.
