After a nerve-wracking few days, a cherished cockapoo named Dennis is safely back in the arms of his owners following a 54-hour disappearance that led to a dramatic rescue from an old mine shaft.
An Ordinary Walk Turns Into a Nightmare
Poppy Jackson, 25, and Rob Mordica, 31, were devastated when Dennis went missing during a walk in Guisborough Woods, near the village of Hutton in North Yorkshire.
Rob had taken Dennis out for their usual walk on November 13, but things took a turn when the playful pup suddenly vanished.
The couple, who live in Thornberry, West Yorkshire, launched a desperate search to find their furry friend.
With the help of 60 volunteers, they combed through the area, determined to locate Dennis.
A Bark from Below
After hours of searching, Rob heard faint barking coming from underground.
Following the sound, he discovered a narrow hole in the woods near where Dennis was last seen.
Peering in, he spotted Dennis trapped about six feet down, frightened and unable to escape.
Poppy shared, “There are so many open holes in that area, and he must have accidentally fallen into one.
I saw his little face down there, and it was heartbreaking. He was clearly scared.”
A Carefully Executed Rescue
The couple devised a plan to coax Dennis out.
Using treats, they encouraged him to move closer to the opening.
Rob then managed to reach down, secure Dennis with a slip lead, and carefully lift him to safety.
Although exhausted and hungry, Dennis was otherwise unharmed.
“I was so worried we’d lost him for good,” Poppy admitted.
“But apart from being completely worn out, he’s okay. He slept like a log that night and hasn’t let us out of his sight since.”
A Reminder for Caution
Reflecting on the ordeal, Poppy emphasized the dangers of the area.
“Dennis usually has great recall, but something must have distracted him.
People walking in Guisborough Woods need to be cautious because these openings are a hazard.
They really should be fenced off to prevent accidents like this.”
What’s Next for Dennis?
After the emotional rollercoaster, Dennis is enjoying life back at home with plenty of cuddles and attention.
Poppy and Rob are more determined than ever to keep him safe and are encouraging local authorities to address the risks posed by the unfenced mine shafts.
This remarkable story serves as a reminder to pet owners to stay vigilant during walks, especially in unfamiliar or hazardous areas.
For Dennis, it’s a happy ending—and perhaps a lesson learned about staying close to his humans!
