Percy Tau officially parts ways with Qatar SC after short injury-hit spell in the Middle East as Kaizer Chiefs monitor his next move in South Africa

It’s not every day that a high-profile South African footballer suddenly becomes a free agent — and when it happens, clubs take notice.

That’s exactly the situation with Percy Tau, whose unexpected release from Qatar SC has stirred up interest back home, especially from Kaizer Chiefs fans who have long hoped to see him in the black and gold.

Tau’s Time in Qatar Cut Short

Tau’s stint at Qatar SC was brief and far from ideal.

He joined the club just this past January after leaving Egyptian giants Al Ahly, but his time in Qatar was plagued by injuries.

Despite featuring in 10 matches, he never found the back of the net — though he did manage to notch up four assists.

On Thursday, the club officially announced Tau’s departure alongside several other exits, including head coach Mehdi Nafti and players like Ben Malango, Javi Martinez, Badr Benoun, and Carlinhos Vinicius.

Ahmed Abdelkader also returned to Al Ahly at the end of his loan spell.

With Tau now a free agent, the spotlight is firmly back on where he might head next.

Kaizer Chiefs Back in the Picture?

Before signing with Qatar SC, there had already been whispers of interest in Tau from clubs in Iran, North Africa, and, most notably, South Africa.

Among those local clubs, Kaizer Chiefs have consistently been linked with the Bafana Bafana star.

In fact, during the last transfer window, Chiefs were believed to have made inquiries and even tabled bids, but couldn’t match Al Ahly’s asking price.

Now that Tau is unattached, that financial hurdle no longer exists — which could pave the way for a fresh approach from the Soweto giants.

Chiefs Need Experience – Is Tau the Answer?

Kaizer Chiefs have made no secret of their desire to bring in experienced forwards, especially under coach Nasreddine Nabi, who has reportedly been on the lookout for attacking reinforcements.

With Tau now available without a transfer fee, the only real challenge is agreeing on personal terms — a far simpler scenario than before.

Tau could offer the kind of creative spark and pedigree Chiefs are craving, even if his recent form has been hampered by injuries.
