Pep Guardiola is set to make his first return to Manchester City since leaving the club in the summer when he attends next Wednesday’s Champions League meeting with Paris Saint-Germain.
The former City manager is expected to be at the Etihad Stadium alongside members of the club’s board, including chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak, for the European fixture.
Former Manager Backs City
Guardiola’s visit comes shortly after he publicly supported Manchester City following the verdict delivered by an independent commission into alleged financial rule breaches.
City were found guilty of all but one of the charges brought against them, with the club subsequently lodging an appeal against the findings.
The commission found that the club had artificially inflated commercial revenues by £830 million through what were described as “sham” contracts involving a number of Abu Dhabi-based companies.
Guardiola Confirms His Support
Guardiola spoke out in support of City a day after the verdict was made public, declaring his continued allegiance to the club.
“I want every single Manchester City fan across the world to know I am here; more than ever,” he said.
“I am, always have been, always will, be behind my club, my owner, my chairman, Ferran (Soriano), the players, staff, Enzo (Maresca) and you, our unique supporters.
“Let me be clear: we will get through this together. I love you all.”
Decision Followed Some Uncertainty
Sources close to Guardiola had indicated earlier on Wednesday that the 55-year-old was still uncertain about whether he would be able to attend the match.
A decision was subsequently made for him to travel to Manchester for the Champions League fixture.
Manel Estiarte, Guardiola’s long-time right-hand man, is also expected at the Etihad.
Estiarte carries out consultancy work for City Football Group.
Close Ties Remain at City
Guardiola retains close links with several figures at Manchester City, including Enzo Maresca, who worked as his assistant during the club’s Treble-winning campaign and is now a City ambassador.
The former manager’s return will therefore bring him back to the stadium where he spent several years leading the club before his departure during the summer.
City Prepare for European Fixture
Manchester City will face Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League encounter on Wednesday, with Guardiola expected to be among those watching from the Etihad.
Maresca’s squad are scheduled to return to full training on Thursday before travelling to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.
