When it comes to South African football, the rivalry between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs is legendary, not just on the field but also when it comes to signing top talent.
Both clubs often find themselves eyeing the same high-profile players, and it looks like the latest Bafana Bafana international could be the next battleground for them.
Chiefs and Pirates Competing for Top Talent
In the past few transfer windows, both Chiefs and Pirates have been linked to a number of players, many of whom could have a big impact on the team’s performance.
Some of the more talked-about names include Oswin Appollis and Thabang Matuludi from Polokwane City, as well as Golden Arrows striker Lungelo Nguse, who is currently injured.
There’s also the talented left-back from Stellenbosch FC, Fawaaz Basadien, who has been a part of these transfer rumors.
Interestingly, Cape Town Spurs’ Asanele Velebayi has become a quieter prospect, though with his team’s ongoing struggles in the First Division, he could certainly be someone to watch come season’s end.
The Next Target: Sinxolo Kwayiba
As the transfer market heats up, all eyes are now on Chippa United’s Sinxolo Kwayiba.
The midfielder has been a key player for the team, and both Pirates and Chiefs have been rumored to be interested in him for some time.
In fact, Pirates were linked to Kwayiba in previous windows, with Chiefs later entering the picture, reportedly exploring the possibility of a swap deal involving Christian Saile.
However, Chiefs ultimately used Saile to bring in Tashreeq Morris from SuperSport United, while Pirates ended up not making any signings.
This left Kwayiba at Chippa United, with the expectation that he would remain there until the end of the current season.
Recently, Chippa’s coach Thabo September hinted that the club wouldn’t stand in Kwayiba’s way should he choose to leave.
Pirates Likely to Beat Chiefs in Kwayiba’s Race
Now, according to sources close to the situation, Pirates are in a strong position to secure Kwayiba’s signature.
Soccer-Laduma reports that the Buccaneers are set to beat Chiefs to the punch when it comes to signing the highly sought-after Bafana international.
A source shared with the publication, “Expect him to make the switch at the end of the season, and it could be one of the big deals, which could involve a player swap and money. Pirates are very interested in him.”
