Orlando Pirates have a big decision ahead of them as they prepare to choose their next head coach.
The current manager, Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, will be leaving the club after a highly successful three-season tenure in Mayfair.
Under Riveiro’s leadership, the Buccaneers have reclaimed their status as one of the top teams in South Africa, securing five trophies during his time in charge.
And there’s still a chance for the team to add three more titles to their collection before he departs, making for a potential fairy-tale ending to his stint at the club.
Management Looks Ahead to the Future Without Riveiro
With Riveiro’s departure confirmed, the club’s management is already looking toward next season and beyond.
The task at hand is to find a coach capable of continuing the Pirates’ upward trajectory.
Initially, Pitso Mosimane was considered the front-runner for the role. However, recent developments have changed the game.
Mokwena Takes Center Stage as Top Candidate
Rulani Mokwena, who is currently managing Wydad Athletic Club in Morocco, has emerged as the club’s preferred choice for the head coach position.
According to reports, Mokwena will be leaving Wydad at the end of the season, making him available for the Pirates.
This would mark Mokwena’s second stint with the Buccaneers.
He previously managed the team in 2019 for 14 matches, securing four wins, five losses, and five draws.
His first run wasn’t as successful as hoped, and he was relieved of his duties.
However, this new opportunity could be a fresh chapter for both Mokwena and Orlando Pirates.
Pirates Fans Weigh In: Mokwena or Mosimane?
Now the question is: Who do Pirates fans want to see at the helm—Mokwena or Mosimane? With both coaches having their strengths, it’s sure to be a tough call.
