The council made the call while debunking media reports claiming that the Traditional ruler of the community, Igwe Alfred Achebe nearly boarded the Abuja-Kaduna train that was attacked by bandits.
Correspondent, Joseph Egbeocha reports that several media reports quote Igwe Achebe, who is the Chairman of the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Council, as saying at the one-day security meeting convened by Governor Chukwuma Soludo last Saturday in Awka that a phone call saved him from boarding the train on twenty-eight March 2022.
Giving details of Igwe Achebe’s travel before, during and after the unfortunate train attack, the council said while also the traditional ruler was abroad, the Armed Forces Command and Staff College Jaji, Kaduna State sent a letter dated twenty-first January 2022 inviting him to deliver a lecture on twenty-ninth March 2022 at its annual training programme for officers from different security agencies in the country on internal security, which Igwe Achebe accepted, in line with his commitment to the promotion of peace and harmony in the country.
It further explained that in discussing Igwe Achebe’s travel to Jaji with his host, the option of traveling by train was considered in favor of road transport, with adequate security provided to and from the event without hitches.
The statement signed by the Chief of Staff of Onitsha traditional institution Chief Osita Anionwu, noted that on Thursday, thirty-first March, Igwe Achebe attended the South-East Leadership Press Conference at Enugu, and in his goodwill message, lamented the State of insecurity and violence in the country, and drew attention to the train attack in which the Onitsha community lost a young medical Doctor, Chinelo Megafu, adding that it was only in that connection that Igwe Achebe mentioned casually about the attacked train, and that no reference was made to any imaginary phone call from anyone.
Describing the story as false especially as it was claimed that Igwe Achebe made reference to the train attack in Awka, the council said other than delivering keynote address at the event, Igwe Achebe never engaged the media on any other subject whatsoever. Meanwhile, President Muhammadu Buhari has re-assured that drastic measures are being taking to check the activities of terrorists and bandits in Kaduna state and beyond.
Governor Nasir El-Rufai, of Kaduna State who disclosed this while speaking with State House correspondents shortly after updating President Muhammadu Buhari on security development in his State, said the attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train was carried out by Boko Haram insurgents in collaboration with some bandits operating in Kaduna, Zamfara, Niger, Sokoto and Kebbi States.
