As part of efforts to vaccinate 50 per cent of the population in the ongoing nationwide mass vaccination against Covid-19, the Ogun State Government in conjunction with the World Health Organisation ( WHO), has taken the campaign to the People Living With HIV /AIDS.

The State Government and WHO organised a 3-day sensitization programme to selected 50 members of the group of people living with HIV/AIDS from five local government areas.

These Local Government areas included Abeokuta North, Abeokuta South, Ifo, Ijebu-Ode and Sagamu respectively.

The attendees who were vaccinated at the workshop venue would be instrumental in the mobilization of the members of the group in their locality for sensitization and vaccination.

Speaking on the strategic vaccinnation, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, said the move was an integrated service which afforded the government to integrate HIV into Covid-19 vaccination as well as Covid-19 screening, describing it as a one-stop shop which makes the use of health resources more efficient.

Coker said that since the people living with HIV have compromised immunity given their susceptibility to infections, it is important to provide them the vaccine to avoid unnecessary mortality in the group.

She said that the routine check-up of people living with HIV/AIDS gives the health workers access to them without stress, noting that the Ogun State Government is committed to protecting the various vulnerable groups in the society.

” The good thing about the people living with HIV/AIDS is their regular check-ups which is three months apart. This ordinarily gives us access to them. Vaccinating them and the follow-up vaccination will be easy because they come for their drugs every three months.

” The idea of taking the vaccinnation campaign to them is to render an integrated service to bring HIV into Covid-19 vaccination and Covid-19 screening which in a way makes the use of health resources more efficient in this group of people,” she said.
