Tragic Outcome in Ogun State Police Operation: Woman Fatally Shot Amidst Hostage Rescue on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway
In a regrettable turn of events, a 37-year-old woman, Bilikisu Kazeem, lost her life during a fierce gun battle between law enforcement operatives and kidnappers on Friday.
The incident unfolded on the notorious Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, where criminal elements had abducted several travelers, including the Lagos State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Philip Aivoji.
Police Statement on the Incident
The Ogun State Police Command disclosed the unfortunate incident, highlighting that the encounter resulted in the death of Bilikisu Kazeem.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Omolola Odutola, nine hostages were successfully rescued during the operation.
The PPRO issued a statement in Abeokuta on Saturday, sharing details of the intense confrontation.
Details of the Rescue Operation
The police intervention led to the release of nine out of the ten hostages initially in the kidnappers’ custody.
The PDP chairman, Philip Aivoji, remained the sole captive.
During the escape attempts, a White Mazda Bus, registered as LSR 288 XE, sustained slight damage.
Four individuals—Eunice Afolake Osalusi, Erinfolami Samuel, Obafemi Da Altantra, and Adeyinka Mathew—suffered non-life-threatening bullet injuries and are currently stable in the hospital.
Casualty and Recovery Efforts
Regrettably, Bilikisu Kazeem, aged 37, succumbed to her injuries before reaching the hospital.
Her relatives declined any autopsy examination offered by the police, opting to collect her remains promptly.
The police publicist emphasized the recovery of exhibits from the scene, including an AK47 magazine with 28 live ammunition believed to belong to the criminals, as well as handsets and a car key.
Ongoing Efforts to Rescue PDP Chairman
Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of operations has mobilized tactical commanders for joint operations with other security agencies to ensure the safe rescue of the remaining hostage, Philip Aivoji.
The police remain committed to bringing the perpetrators to justice and securing the release of the abducted PDP chairman.
