NPA to oppose bail of man accused of rape and murder of girl, 11

The NPA plans to oppose his bail. Spokesperson for the Northern Cape NPA Mojalefa Senokoatsane said 11-year-old Relebogile Segami’s body was discovered on 31 March.

Her body was found behind the Northern Cape Legislature in Kimberley. This was just a day after she was reported missing and a search for her was launched. Machabe is facing charges of rape and murder.

NPA’s Senokoatsane said that the case has been postponed to 13 April.

“The case has been postponed to April 13, for the bail information as well as to allow the accused to make his intentions clear on applying for bail. Looking at the severity of the charges against the accused, the NPA will oppose bail,” Senokoatsane said.

Senokoatsane said that Macahbe has been remanded in custody until his next court appearance. The NPA conveyed its condolences to Relebogile’s family as police continue to investigate the matter.

“The NPA would like to convey its deepest condolences to the family of the victim.  The investigations led by the police are continuing in this matter,” he said.

McWayne Marimuthu was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by the Durban High Court after he pleaded guilty to the 2020 murder of his wife, Roxanne Thanthoni.

National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson-Kara said the accused also pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and received three months imprisonment for each count. These sentences will run in concurrence with the murder sentence.

“In his plea, Marimuthu stated that he suffered from substance abuse. He met Thanthoni at a church function in 2018, and they got married in December 2019,” said the NPA spokesperson. The deceased helped Marimuthu land a job at the same call centre she was employed at since he was without work at the time.
