Nottinghamshire’s County Championship title challenge has suffered a setback with wicketkeeper Kyle Verreynne set to miss the county’s final three matches of the season after receiving a call-up from South Africa.
The 29-year-old has been recalled by Cricket South Africa alongside several other South African players currently involved in county cricket in England, as the national side prepares for its upcoming fixtures against Australia.
Verreynne unavailable for final three matches
Verreynne had committed to playing all of Nottinghamshire’s Championship fixtures this summer, but his international obligations take priority because of the terms of his central contract with Cricket South Africa.
His absence means Nottinghamshire will be without their first-choice wicketkeeper for three important matches against Hampshire, Sussex and Yorkshire.
The timing is particularly significant for the county, who remain firmly in contention for the Championship title with the season approaching its conclusion.
Notts remain firmly in title race
Nottinghamshire currently occupy second place in the Championship table, four points behind leaders Somerset and one point clear of Warwickshire in third.
Verreynne has played an important role in helping Notts establish themselves near the top of the standings, making his departure another selection issue for director of cricket Mick Newell to solve before the final stretch.
Newell praises Verreynne’s contribution
“It’s not ideal that we’re losing Kyle at this point in the season,” Newell said.
“But we understand the decision made by Cricket South Africa.”
Newell also praised Verreynne’s contribution throughout the campaign, pointing to the South African’s performances as an important factor in Nottinghamshire’s strong position.
“We’ve been very happy to have Kyle with us for most of the summer, during which his contributions have put us in a strong position as we head towards the final few matches,” he added.
South Africa preparing for Australia series
Verreynne’s return to South Africa comes ahead of the country’s forthcoming international commitments against Australia.
The three-Test series is scheduled to begin on October 9, 12 days after the County Championship season concludes.
However, South Africa will also face Australia in three one-day internationals before the Test campaign gets underway.
Those fixtures have prompted Cricket South Africa to bring several of its centrally contracted players home from county cricket.
Nottinghamshire seek replacement
With Verreynne no longer available for the final three Championship fixtures, Nottinghamshire must now move quickly to find cover behind the stumps.
Newell confirmed that the club is already looking for a replacement and hopes to finalise the signing as soon as possible.
“We hope to confirm a replacement for Kyle as soon as we’re able to,” he said.
