Nomada Fund, an investment firm based in Miami, Florida, has launched a new media fund focused on providing distribution and visibility to early-stage startups in exchange for equity.
Rather than investing cash, the firm provides Media Credits that support sustained distribution across more than 10 New Media platforms.
These include newsletters, podcasts, online communities, events, search engine optimisation (SEO) and generative engine optimisation (GEO).
Fund Targets Startups in Latin America and the United States
Nomada Fund focuses on pre-seed and seed-stage companies with proven traction in Latin America and the United States.
Through its Distribution for Equity (D4E) model, the firm exchanges ongoing media exposure and distribution services for equity in the startups it supports.
The fund is backed by ILB Media Group, a New Media conglomerate operating more than 20 finance and investment outlets across the United States and Latin America.
Its network provides portfolio companies with access to distribution channels reaching investors, founders and customers.
Nomada Fund Adapts Media-for-Equity Structure
The firm’s investment model draws on the established Media for Equity (M4E) structure, in which media companies exchange advertising space for ownership stakes in businesses.
Nomada Fund’s approach differs in two key respects.
It operates across New Media platforms rather than traditional television, radio and print channels, and it targets pre-seed and seed-stage startups instead of companies at a more mature stage.
The firm describes its approach as the world‘s first Distribution for Equity fund.
Founders Bring Venture Capital and Media Experience
Nomada Fund was co-founded by Jose Kont, who serves as managing partner, and Israel García Ballesteros, who is a venture partner.
Kont has more than 20 years of experience in New Media and is a partner at Impacta VC, CAFI and Cuantico VP.
García Ballesteros is the founder and chief executive officer of Startuplinks, a Spanish-speaking community of venture capital funds and accelerators with more than 270 institutional members.
Venture Partners and Legal Adviser Join the Team
The fund’s wider team includes venture partners Rodrigo Giacaman of Startups Latam, Ileana Figueroa of Pulso Capital and Jose Manuel Aguirre of TECHLA.
Eugenia di Marco serves as the fund’s legal partner.
She received her legal training at the University of California, Berkeley School of Law and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
