No love lost: A timeline of Will Smith Chris Rock’s long-running feud

The conflict between Will Smith and Chris Rock – which turned violent at the Oscars on Sunday night – came as a surprise to many.

But the animosity between the A-listers is nothing new. In fact, the comedian and the actor have been at odds for several years with the slap culminating in the climax.

Although Chris Rock and Will Smith first appeared together in 1995 on an episode of Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, the relationship at the time seemed cordial.

Fast forward two years later and Chris appeared to throw shade at Will after interviewing his wife Jada on his talk show The Chris Rock Show.

As their chat wrapped up, Chris presented the actress with a bottle of champagne “because you just did an interview without mentioning the name Will Smith.”

Over the years, Chris, Will and Jada all appeared friendly towards each other. However, in 2011 Chris Rock went on to shade Will Smith once again when he expressed his annoyance at his industry colleague’s success..

Appearing on David Letterman’s talk show, Chris claimed Will “messed it up for everybody”.

He said: “The guy’s already taken parts from me, now his kids are taking parts from my kids…Will Smith, don’t you have enough? Damn you Will Smith!”

It’s not the first time Chris Rock has picked on actress Jada Pinkett at the Oscars. The razor-tongued star mocked the wife of Will Smith during a skit as host of the show.

Jada was one of many A-listers who boycotted the “all white” Oscars in 2016 after it was called out for its lack of diversity among nominees – especially amongst the black community.

Chris said on stage: “Jada got mad, said she’s not coming. Jada boycotting the Oscars is like me boycotting Rihanna’s panties. I wasn’t invited.

“You get mad. It’s not fair that Will was this good and didn’t get nominated. It’s also not fair that Will was paid $20 million for Wild Wild West“.

Tensions were still running high two years later when Chris Rock took another swipe at Will Smith after he wished his ex and baby mama Sheree Zampino a happy birthday in an Instagram post.

He wrote alongside a pic of his ex with their son Trey: “’Happy Bday, @shereezampino. #BestBabyMamaEver! 🙂 I Love You, Ree-Ree”.

Chris took to the comments section to post: “Wow. You have a very understanding wife”.

His quip was frowned upon by Sheree who replied: “Don’t hate”.
