Nigerian Union Demands Justice After Fatal Shooting of Emeka Uzor During Television Filming in Johannesburg

The Nigerian Union South Africa (NUSA) has spoken out strongly following the tragic death of Emeka Clement Uzor, a Nigerian national who was fatally shot in Johannesburg while a television crew filmed an episode of Moja Love’s Sizokuthola.

The incident, described by the union as “brutal and deeply disturbing,” has sent shockwaves through the Nigerian community in Gauteng.

What Happened at Windsor East

According to NUSA, Uzor was sitting in his car on Sunday afternoon in Windsor East when multiple gunshots struck him, in what the union described as an “assassination-style” attack.

Stray bullets reportedly hit nearby vehicles, endangering bystanders.

Gauteng police confirmed that the shooting occurred in the vicinity of the filming.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said tensions flared after the incident, prompting public order police to respond.

Preliminary investigations suggest that shots may have been fired by security personnel affiliated with the production team.

A murder case has been registered, but no arrests have been made yet.

Media Presence Raises Concerns

The union expressed deep concern over the role of media at the scene.

Emeka Uzor’s death occurred in full view of cameras and crew, including the involvement of Xolani Khumalo, Ekurhuleni mayoral candidate and former host of Sizokuthola.

NUSA criticised attempts in public commentary to justify the killing, stating clearly that no allegation of criminal activity should result in an extrajudicial execution.

The union drew parallels to a previous case involving Nigerian national Silas Ani, who was also reportedly killed under similar circumstances.

These incidents, NUSA said, suggest a worrying pattern of violence targeting Nigerians in South Africa.

Conflicting Claims Surrounding the Deceased

ActionSA, the political party affiliated with Khumalo, indicated that Uzor was suspected of involvement in drug trafficking.

However, these claims have not been tested in a court of law.

NUSA emphasised that allegations alone cannot replace due process, and all responsible parties must be held accountable through the proper legal channels.

Calls for a Transparent Investigation

The Nigerian Union South Africa is urging both the South African government and the South African Police Service to conduct a thorough, impartial, and transparent investigation.

In its statement, the union insisted that the rule of law must prevail, and justice must be served, regardless of the circumstances surrounding Uzor’s life or alleged activities.

NUSA warned that the Nigerian community will continue to demand accountability until all those responsible are brought to justice.

Broader Context: Safety of Foreign Nationals in South Africa

The fatal shooting of Emeka Uzor is part of a troubling trend of violence involving foreign nationals in South Africa, where tensions and xenophobic incidents have occasionally flared.

Incidents such as this raise serious questions about the protection of expatriate communities and the safety measures in place during public events, including film productions.

What’s Next?

Authorities have launched a full investigation, but NUSA has stated that it will closely monitor developments to ensure transparency.

The union has also called for an independent panel to review security protocols during public filming and high-risk events.

Meanwhile, the South African police have appealed to anyone with information about the shooting to come forward.

The production company behind Sizokuthola is cooperating with investigators, and political figures, including Khumalo, are expected to provide statements in the coming days.

For the Nigerian community in Johannesburg, the focus remains clear: justice for Emeka Uzor and stronger safeguards to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
