NFL legend John Elway has shared his experience with Dupuytren’s Contracture, a condition he’s been managing for several years.
Despite being a highly successful figure in football, Elway has faced a health challenge that’s relatively unknown to many, but he’s tackling it with a positive outlook.
What Is Dupuytren’s Contracture?
Dupuytren’s Contracture is a condition where one or more fingers gradually bend towards the palm of the hand.
This results in a limitation where the affected fingers can’t fully straighten, making everyday tasks more difficult.
According to the Mayo Clinic, it is a progressive condition that can significantly impact hand function.
Elway’s Diagnosis and Treatment Journey
Elway, who was diagnosed in his 50s, believes this occurred while he was serving as the general manager of the Denver Broncos.
He didn’t immediately recognize the condition and initially dismissed it.
However, he eventually sought help from the team’s trainer, who directed him to a hand specialist.
He credits early intervention for being crucial in managing the disease.
“I didn’t really know what it was at first,” Elway admitted.
“But I think one of the important things is encouraging people to seek treatment early because it makes a big difference in the results.”
Raising Awareness of Non-Surgical Treatments
Despite dealing with this ongoing health issue, Elway remains optimistic about his treatment.
He’s been vocal about raising awareness, especially for those affected by the same condition.
One of the treatments available is Xiaflex, a non-surgical option, which Elway has promoted.
He’s been surprised by how many people have reached out to him with similar experiences.
“It’s amazing how many people have asked me about the condition and the Xiaflex treatment,” Elway shared.
“You’re not alone, and there’s help available. If you’re experiencing these issues with your hands, it’s worth seeking treatment.”
Elway’s Continued Involvement in Public Life
In addition to his health journey, Elway has kept busy with various public appearances.
He recently appeared as a contestant on The Masked Singer, surprising fans when he was eliminated after just one episode.
Elway performed “I Like It, I Love It” by Tim McGraw, showing a lighter side to the former Super Bowl champion.
Reflecting on His Career and the Future
Elway’s involvement with the Denver Broncos lasted from 2011 to 2020, where he served as general manager.
After stepping away from the team’s front office in April 2023, Elway remains a key figure in the NFL community.
As for what’s next for him, fans will likely continue to see him take on new ventures—whether on or off the field.
