Netflix releases must-see film on the 1970s Andes disaster

Netflix’s Riveting Release: “Society of the Snow” Unveils 1970s Andes Plane Crash Saga

Netflix has recently unveiled a compelling film, “Society of the Snow,” directed by J.A. Bayona, depicting the true story of a tragic 1970s plane crash in the Andes.

Premiering on the streaming platform, the film has already garnered attention, earning a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the Golden Globes.

It stands as Spain’s official entry for the Oscars.

Adapted from Pablo Vierci’s 2009 book, which chronicles the experiences of the 16 survivors, the movie recounts the harrowing events of October 13, 1972.

On that fateful day, Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, en route from Montevideo to Santiago, crashed into a mountain, resulting in 26 lives lost and survivors resorting to cannibalism for survival.

Filming in the Valley of Tears: A Grueling Experience

The film, evoking strong emotional responses from viewers, was shot at the actual crash site located approximately 12,000 feet above sea level in the Valley of Tears.

This treacherous terrain, with temperatures plummeting to -40°C, served as a backdrop for the intense narrative.

Director J.A. Bayona, who visited the crash site before production, emphasized the challenges faced by the characters, stating, “experiencing the extreme cold, lack of oxygen, and constant exhaustion helped us understand what the main characters went through.”

Some scenes were shot in these extreme conditions, contributing to an unforgettable and authentic portrayal of the survivors’ ordeal.

Narrative Perspective: Numa Turcatti’s Struggle for Survival

The movie unfolds through the perspective of rugby player Numa Turcatti, portrayed by Enzo Vogrincic.

Numa, the last survivor to succumb to the harsh conditions, spent his birthday buried in the fuselage after an avalanche struck the survivors.

Towards the end of his life, he ceased eating and weighed a mere 3.92 stone (55 pounds).

The portrayal of Numa’s harrowing struggle adds depth to the film, resonating with audiences who have praised the adaptation for its emotional impact.

Audience Reactions and Reviews: A Cinematic Triumph

The film has received widespread acclaim, with audiences expressing admiration for its powerful storytelling and impressive visual effects.
Viewers, taking to social media platforms, lauded the film as a top-quality release.

Some praised the practical effects, while others highlighted the intense and captivating nature of the narrative.

One reviewer described it as “intense, harrowing, and often terrifying,” portraying a remarkable tale of survival, determination, and the human spirit.

“Society of the Snow” has left an indelible mark on audiences, with its portrayal of a remarkable feat of willpower, teamwork, faith, and a profound understanding of the elements, making it a captivating yet heart-wrenching cinematic experience.
