NATO Military Chiefs of Defence conference to be held in Estonia

The Military Committee, the highest military authority in NATO, will convene in Tallinn, Estonia, from September 16–18, 2022. The Conference will be hosted by Lieutenant General Martin Herem, head of the Estonian Defense Forces.

The Chiefs of Defence will examine military and strategic developments within the Alliance during the NATO Military Committee Conference. They will talk on putting the Alliance’s deterrence and defense posture choices made at the NATO Summit in Madrid into action. The NATO Mission in Iraq (NMI) and the Kosovo Force are among the continuing NATO operations, missions, and activities that the Chiefs of Defense will address (KFOR).

n order to enable multi-domain operations and digital transformation, other items on the agenda include the promotion of diversity and creativity in the Allied Armed Forces. The Chiefs of Defence of Finland and Sweden will attend the conference for the first time as invited guests.

The Military Committee Conference is overseen by Admiral Rob Bauer, Chair of the NATO Military Committee. General Christopher G. Cavoli, the Supreme Allied Commander for Europe (SACEUR), and General Philippe Lavigne will assist him throughout each session (Supreme Allied Commander Transformation – SACT).

At NATO Headquarters in Brussels, the Military Committee convenes in Chiefs of Defence Session twice a year. An Allied member state also hosts a Conference once a year. The Military Committee meets to talk on NATO operations, missions, and activities as well as to provide the North Atlantic Council unrestricted, consensus-based military advise on how the Alliance may most effectively handle threats to international security.

The permanent Military Representatives at the NATO Headquarters in Brussels handle its job on a daily basis.
