National Eucharistic Congress Kicks Off in Indianapolis with Grand Procession and Inspiring Speeches at Lucas Oil Stadium

On the evening of July 17, 2024, the National Eucharistic Congress finally began, marking the start of what promises to be a memorable five-day event.

This grand occasion was marked by the culmination of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimages, featuring the majestic entry of the Eucharistic Jesus in a golden monstrance blessed by the Pope.

Catholic leaders delivered speeches that set an inspiring tone for the Congress, which has attracted tens of thousands to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

The Congress is a significant event, being the first of its kind in the U.S. since World War II. It represents a major effort by U.S. Catholic bishops to rejuvenate faith and devotion to the Eucharist.

The Congress aims to prepare Catholics for a nationwide year of mission, focusing on deepening their connection to the body and blood of Jesus.

The event began with the arrival of the Perpetual Pilgrims—four groups of young pilgrims who had journeyed a staggering 6,500 miles across cities, mountains, and plains.

Their arrival was met with enthusiastic cheers as they carried images representing their respective patron saints to the stage.

The true highlight of the evening came when the Eucharist, housed in a specially blessed monstrance, was processed into the stadium by Bishop Andrew Cozzens of Crookston, Minnesota.

The crowd fell silent, enveloped in the reverent ambiance created by praise and worship music as they gazed upon and adored Christ.

Messages of Inspiration

Following the adoration, the Congress’s emcees took the stage. Montse Alvarado, president and COO of EWTN News, reassured the audience that their prayers would be answered in the presence of the Eucharist.

Father Josh Johnson encouraged attendees to spend time in adoration to be empowered to live like the first disciples.

A Call for Unity

Cardinal Christophe Pierre, Pope Francis’ apostolic nuncio to the U.S., spoke about the Eucharist as a profound gift for unity and expressed a desire for the Church to grow in unity and mission.

He emphasized that a true Eucharistic Revival would lead to a transformative encounter with Christ that extends into everyday life.

Enthusiastic Attendees

Lines stretched around the block as attendees eagerly awaited entry into the Indiana Convention Center.

Dom Mann and his wife, Cassidy, celebrated their first anniversary at the Congress, reflecting on their journey of faith. Jaella Mac Au, one of the Perpetual Pilgrims, shared her experience of understanding that Jesus desires to be seen and engaged with beyond the church.

A Spiritual Celebration

The Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles, led by Sister Faustina and Sister Anastasia Marie, joined the Congress with their delegation, emphasizing the centrality of the Eucharist in their spirituality.

Tim Glemkowski, CEO of the National Eucharistic Congress, expressed hope that attendees would personally encounter Jesus and be inspired to share his love with the world.

Looking Ahead

The Congress continues with various liturgies, Impact Sessions, and exhibits, including Blessed Carlo Acutis’ Eucharistic Miracles exhibit and a replica of the Shroud of Turin.

Each evening concludes with a “Revival Session” featuring keynote talks and worship.
