Historic Drake’s Island Near Plymouth Hits the Market Again Just Five Years After £6 Million Purchase, Offering New Opportunities for Development

Drake’s Island, a historic gem off Plymouth’s coast, is on the market again, just five years after being bought for £6 million.

This 6.5-acre island, named after the famous explorer Francis Drake, is located 600 yards from the shore.

Currently listed with property marketers Carter Jonas, the island is already set up with planning permission for a 43-bed hotel. According to Ali Rana, a partner at Carter Jonas, the island presents an “extraordinary opportunity” for buyers.

Its “heritage and beauty” make it an ideal spot for high-end development.

Morgan Philips, the current owner and a local businessman, had ambitious plans for Drake’s Island, including two hotels, a museum, and a wellbeing center.

Now, he’s looking for someone who can accelerate these projects and bring his vision to life. Mr. Philips expressed his hope to “pass on the baton to someone passionate about the island’s surroundings.”

A Rich History

Drake’s Island boasts a fascinating past. It was used as a prison by King Charles II in the 1600s and later by the military in the 1900s. By the 1960s, it had transformed into an adventure center, where a young JFK Jr. learned to sail in Plymouth Sound.

After years of closure, Mr. Philips reopened the island to the public, offering two-hour guided tours that explore its rich history.

Explore and Experience

Visitors to Drake’s Island can enjoy stunning views of Plymouth and Cornwall from the island’s highest point, a great spot for photos.

For those seeking something a bit different, the island offers a quirky “spirit experience,” where a certified spirit guide shares tales of the island’s infamous past and mysterious occurrences.

Future Plans

On the island’s website, there’s a proposal for a “welcoming small hotel” in the old Governor’s barracks. The plan emphasizes a budget-friendly approach rather than luxury.

Carter Jonas highlights that the island includes over 30,000 sq ft of disused space, with historical significance that makes it ideal for heritage-led regeneration. This includes the development of a new hotel, visitor facilities, and infrastructure improvements.
