A major search-and-rescue operation is underway after a Pakistani cargo aircraft disappeared over the Arabian Sea while traveling from the United Arab Emirates to Karachi, leaving five crew members unaccounted for.
Authorities confirmed that the Boeing 737 freighter lost contact with air traffic control on Tuesday night after the crew reported a technical issue involving the aircraft’s navigation system.
Flight Lost Contact After Reporting Technical Problem
The aircraft, operating as K2 Airways Flight 1732, departed Sharjah earlier on Tuesday for Karachi.
Officials said communication with the flight ended at approximately 9:21 p.m. local time.
According to aviation authorities, both radar and radio contact were lost when the aircraft was about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi.
Moments before communication ceased, the crew alerted controllers to a navigation system malfunction.
Flight tracking data later indicated that the aircraft entered a rapid descent shortly before disappearing from radar.
Wreckage Found But Crew Still Missing
Search teams located debris from the aircraft on Wednesday about 53 nautical miles south of Ormara along Pakistan’s coastline.
Despite recovering pieces of the aircraft, rescuers have not yet found any of the five people who were onboard.
The discovery has shifted the operation toward determining what caused the cargo plane to crash while search teams continue scanning the surrounding waters for possible survivors or additional evidence.
Military and Civilian Agencies Mobilized
Pakistan immediately launched a large-scale search effort involving both military and civilian organizations after the aircraft was declared missing.
The Pakistan Navy redirected the frigate PNS Zulfiqar to the search zone, while the Pakistan Air Force dispatched aircraft to assist with aerial surveillance.
A Navy ATR aircraft also departed from Turbat, located roughly 270 miles west of Karachi, to support the operation over the Arabian Sea.
The coordinated effort involved multiple air and sea assets working together to locate the missing aircraft and its crew.
Aviation Expert Questions Sudden Descent
Aviation analyst Imran Aslam described the aircraft’s final moments as highly unusual, noting that the reported rapid descent does not match what is typically expected during many mechanical failures.
He explained that even if an aircraft were to lose engine power, it would generally continue gliding for some distance rather than falling sharply.
Aslam said he could not understand why the aircraft appeared to descend so suddenly instead of maintaining a controlled glide, suggesting investigators will need to closely examine the available flight data to determine what happened.
Aircraft Was K2 Airways’ Only Plane
Aviation records identify the aircraft as a Boeing 737-400 freighter that was approximately 27 years old and carried the registration AP-BOI.
The aircraft was reportedly the only plane operated by K2 Airways, a Pakistani cargo airline established in 2018.
According to the company‘s website, its first Boeing 737-400SF joined the fleet on July 1, 2024, after arriving in Karachi.
The airline says it was created to provide safe and efficient cargo services connecting businesses across the region and had planned to expand its fleet in the future.
Investigation Begins Into Cause of Crash
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the aircraft to go down, and investigators are expected to analyze flight data, maintenance records and recovered wreckage as part of the inquiry.
The incident has renewed concerns about aviation safety in the region, particularly after the crew’s report of navigation problems moments before contact was lost.
For now, recovery teams remain focused on searching the Arabian Sea for the missing crew members while investigators work to reconstruct the cargo flight’s final minutes and establish what led to the tragedy.
