Mosque attacks ‘on the rise’ in Gauteng – MJC calls for peace and calm

Attacks on mosques in Gauteng are reportedly increasing. A mosque in Lenasia and a robbery at Kensington Mosque has been a cause of concern for many worshippers. Armed criminals forced congregants to the ground during early morning prayer at the Kengsington Mosque.

Radio Islam International spoke with the mosque’s Imam, who described the harrowing scenes. Approximately 11 congregants were forced to lie down in the Masjid.

Muslim Judicial Council attacks on mosques

Speaking to The South African, Moulana Abdul Khaliq Ebrahim Allie of the Muslim Judicial Council condemned the attacks on mosques.

“The violation of sanctity stands to be condemned. Places of worship are filled with hope serenity and peace.”

Moulana Allie went on to speak about the safety congregants feel at places of worship and how this has been violated by the recent attacks.

“People have faith and the belief of protection and safety in places of worship. This kind of violation shakes people.”

Muslim Judicial Council urges congregants to be observant

He believes that congregants from any place of worship need to be vigilant. He mentioned the recent case of alleged arson at the St George’s Cathedral. Moulana Allie has urged congregants to report the attacks on mosques or other places of worship to authorities.

He added that Government needs to bring the attackers to book.

“The people of South Africa and around the globe need prayers. People need faith and a firm belief in the Almighty to inspire. We need to all stand together as faith communities.”

Security company offers advice for congregants due to attacks on mosques

Private security service Vision Tactical offered advice on keeping places of worship safe as the attacks on mosques rise. Director Yaseen Theba expressed his sadness at the attacks at Mosques and places of worship in Gauteng.

Theba has urged local trustees of mosques to get involved with Community Policing Forums (CPFs) as well as their local police stations. Theba advised that those in charge inform the SAPS of the activities at their mosques at all times.

He went on to speak about constant communication is imperative. Adding that it is important, especially with Ramadhaan coming up.
