The SA Weather Service has made some worrying predictions for parts of KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) this Easter weekend: In addition to damaging winds being anticipated, areas like eThekwini, KwaDukuza, Mkhambathini, Ndwedwe, Ray Nkonyeni, uMdoni and uMzumbe are in for disruptive rain, particularly on Saturday evening, 16 April 2022.

KZN COGTA MEC Sipho Hlomuka said relief efforts were underway and measures would be put in place, in light of the incoming heavy rains.

“In line with the operational response provincial disaster management plan, the provincial and municipal multi-sectoral disaster management teams are on high alert to swiftly respond to communities known to be at high risk to avert and minimise the disaster impact,” he said.

Hlomuka added that their main priority is avoid human suffering and the loss of life – and have circulated the weather warnings to role players and communicated them to members of the public.

“Communities at high risk of disasters, such as informal settlements and settlements built on steep slopes and flood plains, are of particular concern, as is road infrastructure, such as bridges and courses located in low-lying areas.”
