The 2025 MOBO Awards lit up Newcastle’s Utilita Arena on Tuesday night, bringing together some of the biggest names in Black music and culture for a night of celebration, surprises, and heartfelt moments. With dazzling performances, groundbreaking wins, and emotional speeches, this year’s ceremony was one to remember.
The Biggest Winners of the Night
Among the standout stars of the evening were Bashy, Ayra Starr, Darkoo, and Odeal, each taking home two prestigious awards. Central Cee also made history, winning Best Male Act for the third consecutive year, bringing his total MOBO wins to seven—tying with Stormzy as the most-awarded rapper in MOBO history.
Ayra Starr, the Nigerian singer-songwriter, achieved a historic victory by winning Best International Act, beating out global icons like Kendrick Lamar and Beyoncé. She also made waves by taking home Best African Music Act, becoming the first woman in 16 years to win the category.
Darkoo shined as well, claiming Best Female Act, triumphing over strong contenders like RAYE, Jorja Smith, and Little Simz. Her collaboration with Dess Dior on Favourite Girl also won Song of the Year, making it a landmark night for the rapper and singer.
Breakthrough Artists and Career-Defining Moments
Odeal, the German-born artist, marked his rising star status by winning Best Newcomer and Best R&B or Soul Act, solidifying his place in the industry. Bashy also had a major night, taking home Album of the Year for Being Poor Is Expensive—his first record in 15 years—and winning Best Hip-Hop Act.
In other major categories, Best Video of the Year went to Mnelia for My Man, directed by Femi Bello, while Jacob Anderson won Best Performance in a TV Show or Film for his role as Louis in Interview with the Vampire.
Special Honors and Emotional Moments
The MOBOs also presented two special awards to honor individuals who have made a lasting impact. Olympic champion Dame Denise Lewis received the Paving The Way Award for her groundbreaking achievements in athletics and broadcasting. The MOBOs praised her for inspiring future generations with her talent and resilience.
Another powerful moment came when Jamaican dancehall legend Vybz Kartel was honored with the MOBO Impact Award for his enduring influence in music. His recent return to the UK stage after serving 13 years of a life sentence added an extra layer of significance to the award.
Kanya King’s Emotional Speech
One of the most heartfelt moments of the night came when MOBOs founder Kanya King took the stage. Recently diagnosed with stage 4 bowel cancer, she delivered a moving speech about health awareness and resilience. Despite her prognosis, King stood strong, reminding the audience of the importance of early detection and self-care.
“My story isn’t over,” she declared, receiving a standing ovation. “This is a new chapter for my voice and my platform—about something just as vital as music: our health.”
To everyone’s surprise, King was then presented with an additional Paving The Way Award for her dedication to elevating Black music and culture.
Star-Studded Performances and Hosts
The night was filled with electrifying performances from some of the biggest names in music. Double award winners Odeal, Darkoo, and Bashy took the stage, while rock duo Nova Twins and hip-hop duo Krept & Konan brought the house down.
Returning host Indiyah Polack, of Love Island fame, was joined by comedian Eddie Kadi, making for an entertaining and energetic duo. Before the show, Polack shared her excitement, promising “a show like no other” in celebration of Black music and culture.
