MK Party promises to investigate sexual harassment allegations made by Mary Phadi against deputy president John Hlophe in Mpumalanga

The MK Party has found itself at the center of controversy after serious allegations of sexual harassment were made against its deputy president, John Hlophe.

While the party says it has yet to officially receive a letter from Mary Phadi, the accuser, they insist they are treating the matter with urgency and plan to investigate thoroughly.

Mary Phadi Confirms Allegations and Points to Evidence

Over the weekend, a letter allegedly written by Mary Phadi, the MK Party’s former convenor in Mpumalanga, began circulating on social media.

The letter, dated January 16, 2025, was addressed to party leader Jacob Zuma and contained accusations of sexual harassment against Hlophe.

In an interview with Newzroom Afrika, Phadi confirmed that she wrote the letter and claimed she has messages to support her allegations.

She also noted that Zuma did not respond to her letter promptly but suggested that the accusations appeared to unsettle him.

MK Party Spokesperson Responds to Claims

On Monday, the MK Party’s spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, spoke to Newzroom Afrika and stated that Hlophe has denied the allegations.

“The deputy president has made his position clear—no such messages were sent,” Ndhlela said.

He added that the party intends to speak with Hlophe directly but emphasized their commitment to handling the matter seriously.

“This issue has gained a lot of attention in the media, and we’ll address it appropriately.

However, the focus remains on the stability of the party as we gear up for the 2026 local government elections,” Ndhlela explained.

Mary Phadi Accused of Defiance

Mary Phadi’s history with the MK Party adds another layer to the ongoing controversy.

Late last year, she was dismissed from the party amid allegations of fund mismanagement and involvement in a plot against a rival.

However, in December 2024, the Mpumalanga High Court ruled in her favor, ordering her reinstatement to her previous roles.

Despite the court ruling, the MK Party appointed former EFF member Busisiwe Mkhwebane to Phadi’s position.

This decision, coupled with the current allegations, has fueled internal tensions within the party.

Ndhlela Labels Phadi a “Rogue Element”

Ndhlela criticized Phadi’s behavior during his interview, accusing her of undermining party leadership.

“We can’t allow individuals to act independently of the organization.

Mary has repeatedly defied instructions, and it’s creating instability,” he said.

He also accused her of treating party accounts like her personal funds, further adding to the friction.

What’s Next for the MK Party?

The MK Party has a lot on its plate as it works to address these allegations while preparing for upcoming elections.

How the leadership handles this situation could have significant implications for the party’s future.
