Mike Tyson’s upcoming fight against Jake Paul is shrouded in uncertainty after Tyson’s recent comments about a serious medical scare he experienced earlier this year.
The Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) has announced plans to investigate Tyson’s health following his revealing account of the health emergency he suffered in May.
This comes just days before the fight is set to take place.
A Life-Threatening Medical Emergency
Tyson, 58, shared his frightening experience earlier this month, recounting how he vomited blood and passed out mid-flight on a trip from Miami to Los Angeles.
He explained that, during the flight, he started feeling ill, with dizziness and nausea taking over.
Airline staff even had to ask passengers if there was a doctor on board to help him.
When the plane landed in Los Angeles, paramedics boarded and treated him, with Tyson describing the terrifying symptoms as “defecating tar.”
Upon arrival at the hospital, doctors initially didn’t rule out the possibility of death, adding to Tyson’s fears.
He was diagnosed with a two-and-a-half-inch ulcer, which was actively bleeding.
The diagnosis forced a delay of his planned July fight with Jake Paul, as Tyson’s health took priority.
The Doctor’s Words and Tyson’s Resolve
Reflecting on the emergency, Tyson explained how he had been training hard only days before the incident, feeling great at first. But suddenly, things took a turn.
“I started feeling tired and didn’t know what was wrong,” Tyson recalled.
“On the plane, I threw up blood and next thing I knew, I was on the floor.”
While in the hospital, Tyson asked his doctor if he was going to survive, but her vague response only heightened his anxiety.
“She didn’t say no,” Tyson said.
“She said we have options though. That’s when I got nervous.”
Despite the grave situation, Tyson emphasized his strong desire to get back in the ring: “I don’t want to die in a hospital bed. I want to die in the ring.”
Texas Officials Investigate Tyson’s Health
As the fight with Jake Paul approaches, Tyson’s comments have prompted officials from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation to step in.
A spokesperson for TDLR confirmed that Tyson would undergo a thorough pre-fight physical conducted by TDLR-appointed doctors.
The doctors will review his medical history before clearing him for the match.
However, there is a risk that the fight may not happen at all.
The assessment may lead to the bout being downgraded from a professional fight to an exhibition, or it could be canceled entirely.
With the evaluation scheduled for just 24 hours before the fight, Tyson’s participation is still uncertain.
Tyson’s Training Regimen for the Fight
Despite the health scare, Tyson remains optimistic that the fight will proceed as planned.
He has been diligently training for the bout, including making personal sacrifices to ensure he’s in top condition.
Tyson has even stopped using marijuana, which is on the list of banned substances for TDLR, and temporarily given up sex to keep his focus sharp.
His publicist, Joann Mignano, spoke on Tyson’s commitment to the rules, stating, “He only stopped as a means of following all of the rules.
But he is still a strong advocate for the medicinal benefits of cannabis for his personal well-being and others like him.”
As the fight date looms, Tyson’s health and readiness will remain under scrutiny, but he’s adamant about making his return to the ring, despite the odds stacked against him.
