Mexican Cartel Member Edgar Fabian Villasenor-Garcia Sentenced to 20 Years in Prison for Trafficking Cocaine and Methamphetamine into the United States

A Mexican national and armed member of the notorious Cártel de Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG) received a hefty prison sentence today in Washington, D.C. Edgar Fabian Villasenor-Garcia was sentenced to nearly 21 years behind bars for his involvement in a major drug trafficking conspiracy.

The cartel, known for its brutal operations, had Villasenor-Garcia move large quantities of cocaine and methamphetamine into the United States.

The Scope of His Crimes

For over five years, Villasenor-Garcia was deeply involved in the CJNG’s violent criminal activities, including smuggling huge amounts of cocaine and meth into the U.S. His actions contributed directly to the ongoing drug crisis in both the United States and Mexico.

The Justice Department’s Criminal Division, led by Supervisory Official Antoinette T. Bacon, emphasized how CJNG’s actions have torn apart communities with drugs and violence.

“Today’s sentence sends a strong message to all drug cartels, both inside and outside of Mexico: We’re relentlessly going after you,” said Bacon.

The DEA’s Ongoing Fight Against CJNG

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is determined to end the deadly drug crisis in the U.S., and Villasenor-Garcia’s sentencing is another step forward.

DEA Acting Administrator Derek S. Maltz stressed the importance of this case, saying that dismantling cartels like CJNG is the agency’s top priority.

The CJNG’s reach, fueling addiction in the U.S. and violent chaos in Mexico, has made it one of the deadliest cartels.

The DEA, along with local and international partners, is working tirelessly to bring justice and save lives.

The Impact of Villasenor-Garcia’s Actions

Court records show that Villasenor-Garcia, also known as “Gary” or “El Monje,” played a pivotal role in trafficking at least 450 kilograms of cocaine and 780 kilograms of methamphetamine.

These drugs were intended for distribution throughout the United States.

As a member of CJNG, Villasenor-Garcia was part of an organization that traffics massive amounts of drugs worldwide.

The cartel funds its violent activities with profits from illegal drugs, devastating communities and causing untold suffering.

His Role in the CJNG

Villasenor-Garcia joined the CJNG before 2017 and took up arms as part of their operations.

His involvement went beyond mere drug trafficking; he was armed and participated in protecting shipments, maintaining control over cartel members, and combating rival groups.

In November 2024, he pled guilty to conspiracy charges, admitting that violence and firearms were central to the cartel’s methods.

A Collaborative Effort to End the Drug Trade

The investigation leading to Villasenor-Garcia’s arrest was carried out by the DEA’s Los Angeles Field Division.

The case was prosecuted by trial attorneys Lernik Begian and Douglas Meisel from the Criminal Division’s Narcotics Section.

Additionally, the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs and Office of Enforcement Operations provided critical support.

This case is part of the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF), which uses a coordinated, multi-agency approach to take down high-level drug trafficking organizations.

The ongoing efforts of law enforcement agencies at all levels continue to target and disrupt the operations of cartels like CJNG, working tirelessly to protect communities and curb the dangerous effects of the drug trade.
