The legal proceedings involving five suspects arrested at former president Nelson Mandela’s home in Houghton, including his grandson, have been postponed for further investigation.
The suspects were apprehended in connection with a hijacking incident and will return to court on January 17 for further developments.
Arrest Details and Charges
On January 10, four of the five suspects appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court after being found in possession of a hijacked vehicle.
The hijacking took place in Oaklands on Wednesday morning, where a Toyota Corolla was stolen.
The vehicle was later discovered at Mandela’s former residence in Houghton.
Authorities, including Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, confirmed that an unlicensed firearm was also recovered during the operation.
As a result, the suspects face serious charges including kidnapping, robbery, and assault.
The court has scheduled a hearing on January 17 for the bail application and further investigation.
Mbuso Mandela’s Previous Legal Issues
This arrest adds to the list of legal troubles faced by Mbuso Mandela, Nelson Mandela’s grandson.
Mbuso has previously made headlines for controversial reasons and has been referred to as the “black sheep” of the family.
In 2013, he was involved in a family dispute where it was revealed he had fathered a child with his brother’s ex-wife, a matter that stirred family tensions.
In 2015, Mbuso was accused of raping a 15-year-old girl at a Johannesburg bar.
While he claimed the encounter was consensual and that he believed the girl was of legal age, the case was eventually dropped after the charges were withdrawn.
That same year, Mbuso found himself at the center of another scandal when his brother, Ndaba, accused him of stealing over $6,000 from his room at their Houghton residence.
