Mariah Smith was born on January 9, 2011, in Lake City, Florida, to her loving parents, John and Latasha Smith. She was the youngest of their four children, a cherished presence in their lives. Mariah’s vivacious spirit and fun-loving nature were contagious, and she had a remarkable ability to bring smiles to people’s faces.
A Bright Student and Talented Artist
Mariah was a dedicated sixth-grader at Richardson Middle School, where she not only excelled academically but also earned the admiration and respect of her teachers and classmates. She was known for her passion for dancing, singing, and playing the piano, tirelessly working to perfect her artistic talents.
A Heart for Family and Friends
In her leisure time, Mariah found immense joy in spending quality moments with her family and friends. Board games, movie nights, and shared laughter were some of her favorite pastimes.
A Senseless Act of Violence
Tragedy struck on the evening of August 24, 2023, when a senseless act of violence shattered the Smith family’s world. Jatarious Rashad Fluellen, a 14-year-old, fired multiple shots into their home, one of which tragically struck Mariah while she sat on the couch. Despite the valiant efforts of first responders and medical personnel, Mariah was declared deceased at the scene.
Community Support and Justice
The Lake City community was deeply affected by this senseless act, rallying around the Smith family to offer support and condolences. An ongoing investigation identified Jatarious Rashad Fluellen as the primary suspect in Mariah’s murder, leading to his subsequent arrest and charges.
